The Meta description tag is a HTML piece of code used between the Head of a document, the description tag is used by search engines to understand the content of your web page. The Meta description tag is displayed in the search engine results page underneath the page link.

Example of the Meta description tag:

You would use the Meta description tag to help towards your website optimisation campaign. Search engines use this tag as one of their ranking factors but I wouldn’t worry too much about it.
