    What Is a Small Business?
According to the Security and Exchange Commission a Small Business is... For SEC purposes, small businesses are defined as domestic companies with revenues of under $25 million, and not investment companies. Subsidiaries of larger companies do not qualify as small businesseswhile The Small Business Association says... There are many definitions of a small business. The legal definition of "small" often varies by country and industry, but is generally under 100 employees. These businesses are normally privately owned corporations, partnerships, or sole proprietorshipsFor those of us who own and operate a small business or dream of having their own business in the future, small business is much more than those definitions. The small business is

Five Questions for Improving Business Reports
Have you ever asked for a report based on data in a database? Or have you ever been asked to create such a report? Starting a report can sometimes feel like a mind reading trip into uncharted territory. I have spent over 5 years creating reports and I found it was often necessary to go back and redo reports because communication was not clear. Sometimes the party requesting the report didn't know what they really wanted. Sometimes the party creating the report does not ask enough questions before starting. Over the years, I have come up with starter questions that provide a plan. Using these I have more often created the needed report on the first draft. What question are you trying to answer? I have often had management ask for something specific without first telling me what they wanted to know. When the objective is not set forth at the onset, often what management requested does not give them the answers they were seeking. This is usually due to the fact that people were jumping ahead to the result inst

Top 10 Workplace Trends for 2006
As 2005 starts to slowly fade in our rear view mirror, I get excited about thinking what we will see ahead of us in the areas of workplace trends. After reading numerous articles, attending conferences and analyzing research reports, here’s what my crystal ball says are the top 10 trends we’ll be seeing in the workplace in 2006:As businesses struggle to attract and retain the best and the brightest people in a hot market, as our population continues to gray, and the global economy gains more momentum, employers will have to start managing and engaging their work force. All the automation, tools and processes will go in vein if there aren’t good people to create, invent and manage the business.William Bridges noted it first. Technology, information and communications have come together to radically and permanently change the structure of work. This trend is not about losing jobs; rather, it is about redefining our understanding of work

    Poster Printing
The success of any product is greatly determined by the advertising campaign. Moreover, advertising is a crucial weapon to influence customer psychology. Advertising campaigns involve the use of many medias, posters being one of the most important. Posters located in strategic locations can do wonders to draw the prospective customer?s attention.Previously, poster printing had its limitations and often the designer?s efforts did not get proper justice due to the inferior quality prints. However, things have changed with the developments in screen-printing techniques and have become even better with the advent of digital printing. In recent years, many digital poster-printing companies have emerged and can help with an entire advertising campaign. These companies not only provide posters for commercial purposes but also design and print posters for reunions, anniversaries, birthdays, concerts, PR events, and anything that needs to draw public attention. These companies use cutting-edge technology in color poster

Michelle Obama Delivers Address on Community Relations at Best Bosses Conference
The culmination of the 2006 Best Bosses Conference & Celebration, held September 27, 2006 in Chicago, was a Plenary Address delivered by Michelle Obama. Obama is Vice President for Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals. Her topic was “Creating Relationships Between Business and Community.”Obama was selected by former Hospitals President and CEO Michael Riordan to head the organization’s Office of Community Affairs, and lead the Hospitals’ efforts to broaden its relationship with its neighborhood – Chicago’s South Side – and the city at large. As Obama said, her previous experience at the university (she was associate dean of students and later executive director for community affairs at the Hospitals) and that fact that she is a native South Sider gives her a “unique perspective of being both an insider and an outsider” to her employer. In explaining why businesses and nonprofits alike should look at building a community relations program, Obama stressed that these types of programs are

But relying on it exclusively can hurt you. Yes, six degrees of separation and all that, but counting on those connecting conversations to consistently mention you, especially down the line, is a bad gamble. Word of mouth needs help. A kick in the butt
