How do You Get the Most Out of a Limited B2B Marketing Budget?
Lesson 1If you really are in B2B then you will know all of your customers pretty well because they’ve been placing orders with you for a while and should continue placing orders with you for a good while longer. The reality is that many salespeople, for whatever reason, not only don’t like administrative tasks such as maintaining databases but also regard their customers as their customers, not the businesses.Action PointEnsure that your business keeps an up-to-date record of the most important decision makers and key influencers. If you must, give the database an unthreatening title, such as the Christmas Card List. Cost: ?nilLesson 2Just who are your most important customers? Are they the customers that spend the most with you? Are they the ones that give you the biggest margin or the most profit? Or are they the organisations that you currently do some business with but could do a lot more?Action PointMake it clear to the sales teams exactly which type of customers are important, and what sort of mix is required, and why. You might need the large accounts to pay for the overheads, the high margin accounts to contribute to profits and the growth potential accounts to fit into the growth plans you’ve got. Not to mention the inevitable customer c

What? What are deserving customers? I want to sell to everybody, don’t I? Well… do you?Smith Manufacturing Company, one of your best customers, regularly buys from you and your company. They order pieces and parts yet seldom yield an opportunity to solve larger manufacturing, production or quality problems, choosing instead to call other companies for these services, some of which may be your competitors. They call frequently, requiring lots of assistance from your inside sales and shipping people. They seem to have many issues too, issues that frequently require your attention and those of your customer service department. They pay late, but they always pay eventually. They buy at a discount and you earn less profit than you should for an account of this type. You call on them regularly, socialize with their managers over lunch and an occasional dinner, and enjoy a good reputation throughout their firm. You may feel this is one of your key accounts.Does this scenario sound familiar? Or… does it sound all too familiar? We all have them; customers that consume a great deal of our resources. We like them. We like their employees. We spend a great deal of time there. The burning question becomes: Can we honestly continue to justify our current or growing level of investment of our resource

How to improve conversion rate for your website? How to get more traffic to your website? How to turn your traffic into profit? Here are some techniques you can use:

    1. Give your prospects extra incentives so they will order quicker. It could be free shipping, a faster shipping option, free gift wrapping.

    2. Make your small business look big on the world wide web. Design your web site using professional graphics, ordering systems, organized layouts.

    3. Attract a lot more customers by giving them clear ordering instructions. Give them all the information they need so they can complete their order easily.

    4. Give your customers buying incentives so they'll make repeat purchases. Offer them discounts, free gifts, bonus points.

    5. Tell people about your site whenever you get a chance. Those people will tell other people and so on. It's a cheap way to multiply your advertising.

    6. Write and send press releases for your web site. Use a strong headlines, make it newsworthy, and tell the journalist why their readers would like it.

    7. Use a lot of headlines on your web site and ezine. Some types of headlines are free offers, questions, problem solvers, sales, and statistics.

    8. Design graphics, templates, buttons and banner ads for other sites. Allow people to use them in exchange for your web link on their home page.

    9. Use time saving promotional software. You can automate your search engine submissions, posting to online classified sites.

    10. Advertise your online business by dressing in clothes that are imprinted with your ad. It could be a T-shirt, ball cap, coat.

Run split testing for different web copies and find out what works the best and what not, then use the good ones over and over again for maxium profit.

Jen over at Jensense ran a pretty important post recently. It covered a topic that’s been bothering me for a while now. For about the last month, or even more, my blog at JoelComm.com has been showing one single ad across the top of the page.It hasn’t been doing me any harm and I’m not complaining. The revenue figures for that page haven’t taken a hit so I don’t feel that I’ve got any reason to worry too much. I just wished I knew more about why it was happening and whether I can expect it to change back to multiple ads in the near future.Jen managed to chat with AdSenseAdvisor, an official Google AdSense Support Team member (it’s the January 10th post at Jensense.com), and although they were discussing why multiple ad units have recently been showing two ads instead of four to so many people, they answered my little question too. As AdSenseAdvisor put it: “If you only see two ads in an ad unit appearing, it is because our technology has determined the publisher will receive a higher eCPM. This is an automatic optimization feature.”As for my big ad across the top of my page, that’s also an expanded text ad; in other words, it’s still a CPC ad not a site-targeted ad.Well, that’s fine. Now I know. But there’s not a lot I can do about it, and this is where I start to have a p

    1. Have proper lighting. Natural light is best, but a standard desk lamp with special light bulbs that create white light will do the job. Remember, the clearer your picture, the more bids you’ll get.2. A Clear uncluttered background. There’s nothing worse than looking at a listing and wondering what exactly is for sale. Use a plain colored background, and showcase your item so the shopper knows exactly what you’re selling. You can use things like plain color sheets, or large white cardboard draped over boxes to create an attractive seamless setting.3. Never use a flash or zoom when taking pictures. To get the perfect picture all you need is good light, and instead of using the zoom lens, simply move in close to your item.4. When size matters. If you’re selling something, and find it hard to explain the dimensions of the item, showcase it next to something that is standard and people can relate to. For example a business card or a CD case or a real person.5. Show every angle. For instance if you were selling a brand new pair of shoes, you’d show the top, the bottom, the inside, the heal, the side, and maybe even a real model to really show the buyer the shoe from every angle possible.6. Focus on the item. If your picture has a lot of unnecessary background, you can

Even if salespeople have undergone progressive sales training, there’s no guarantee that they will be successful. It is common knowledge that skills grow rusty over time and salespeople are prone to pick-up bad habits along the way or to simply skip steps and take shortcuts that can lead to long-term trouble. Perhaps even more important these days, is the fact that markets, competition, technologies and customer preferences are all in a constant and accelerating state of change. This fact requires that sales people are able and willing to rethink their sales strategy and approach frequently and receive a regular top-up of skills and motivational coaching.In-Field training and coaching is an ideal opportunity for the Sales Director or Sales Manager to assess the ongoing training needs of their team. The Logical In-Field Training Sequence:The logical approach to field accomplishment training, is to break the call plan down into three sections:Before the call.During the call. After the call. Before The Call:Ensure that the salesperson is thinking in terms of their customer’s issues by asking:“What are the customer’s needs/issues?”“What is their potential?”“What is their turnover?”“What is
