When Merriam-Webster assembled their list of most searched definitions for 2005, they could easily reason why certain words would make the list. Levee, tsunami, filibuster, and refugee were tied to events during the year. Even insipid was explainable due to the timing of the hits and comments made by Simon Cowell of wannabe singers during American Idol. Yet one word, the top word, seemed to be more wide-spread than caused by a single event. The word: Integrity.More people searched for the definition of integrity than any other word during the year. The searchers were potentially hungering for the days when one’s words coincided with their actions under an umbrella of honesty and morality. There was a day when one could trust their supervisor to have concern for their interests and for the heads of the organization to be concerned about the future of the people working for them. Perfecting the Elevator Pitch
Last week I had the opportunity to attend a trade show. Unfortunately, at many booths, particularly those of startup companies, I left without a full understanding of what the exhibiting company really did.The experience reminded me of the challenges of putting together a good elevator pitch. An elevator pitch is a brief description of a business idea. It is termed as such since it usually must be delivered within the time that you spend with an investor in an elevator, or just a few minutes. Much like an entrepreneur seeking capital, the exhibitors at the trade show were challenged with giving an elevator pitch that would get their target audience to write them a check.Most of the new ventures that exhibited did not have concise pitches. They used lots of words, but never clearly explained what they offered. Conversely, several new ventures had pitches that were interesting and encouraged prospects to learn more. "Okay, boss, that's a nice title up there, but it's a little obvious, isn't it? Anyway, I thought this was supposed to be about marketing on the internet and exciting stuff like that. You're already starting to bore me."Well, that depends on how you look at that title.If you just assume that I mean that the internet is a great place to shop because of its mutiple access points to just about anything your heart desires, you're right.However, let's digress just a little so I can make a point.There were an awful lot of people who looked at things that "everybody knew", saw the same thing everybody else saw, and that was the end of it. Then, there were the ones who looked at what everybody else saw, and they saw possibilities, dreams, and the road to fame and financial success...or perhaps the road to a better world.
