Smart Staffing Practices: Don't Confuse Activity with Results
Does your hiring process consist of proven practices or just a hodgepodge of activities that get into gear when someone says, “I need more people” or “Sally has left and we need someone to take her place NOW?”Smart hiring is more than running ads, screening, interviewing and checking references. It is a series of specific procedures that can work well or create bottlenecks and inefficiencies. Here are eight steps to improve your hiring success rate.Step 1: Begin With a Discussion Not a Job Description. Find out what is really needed for today and tomorrow. Identify the key roles and responsibilities of the position. Understand how this position aligns with the goals of the organization. Step 2: Know Your Product – Do a Task Analysis. Precisely identify the key components of the job – skills, knowledge, attitudes. Differentiate between the ‘absolutes vs. the ‘nice –to-haves’. Identify department milestones for the next 6-24 months. Step 3: Identify Screening Tools. Determine the best assessment tools - personality tests, in-basket exercises. Develop real life examples of competency to use as a measuring rod. Formulate the behavioral traits that are necessary to look for. Step 4: Realistically Identify the Ideal Candidate. Why do we hate advertising? Because it is intrusive, importunate, sometimes vulgar. Everyone will give their own reasons. But you see what a contradiction – without advertising there are no sales. That is true. People may keep on telling you that they can’t stand advertising and never read adverts and advertising copies. But they are lying to themselves. Advertising texts work better than ever and keep on boosting the sales rates. However we should note that poor advertising text won’t make a sale. So before creating your first advertising masterpiece you should know some basic rules. Ideally advertisements should be attractive to catch the customer’s attention and useful to make the customer buy the product. Usually appealing images are used for attracting the clients’ attention. Images will never force the people to spend their money on your product. But words will.Let’s see how to make words earn money for you. Every advertising opens with a headline or a title. So it is the starting point of your seducing the customer. The title serves a very important purpose to grab the readers’ attention and make them read on up to the end of the advertising message. Do not experiment with the headlines: your attempts to make it memorable or show your literature talent may turn into collapse, as the reader’s won’t understand you. A better alternative is to offer a kind of promise in the headline using simple and clear language. Some psychologists r

Just like any business, your identity is very important. On the World Wide Web, your domain name is your identity. Of course, you can opt for a subdomain name that comes with many free web hosting like http://yourdomain.netfirms.com. But if you are serious about being successful on the Internet, you have to get your own domain name, like http://www.yourdomain.com.

Top 10 reasons to have your own domain name

Please note that all domain names listed in italic are ficticious:
    1. It is cheap and easy to get your own domain name (less than $15/year in most cases)
    2. You own the name (as long as you pay the annual fee)
    3. You are not dependent on one web hosting company to let you use a subdomain, or worse, a subdirectory
    4. Your web site promotion effort does not go to waste if you change your web hosting company (because the domain name remains the same regardless of what host you use)
    5. The domain name can be optimized to your business, like www.best-used-cars.com
    6. Your web site is more professional
    7. The domain name is easier to remember. For instance, www.best-used-cars.com rather than www.geocities.com/web/public/business/auto/best-used-cars/
    8. It is much easier to sell a web site with its own domain name
    9. A good domain name can be an asset
    10. It is cheap and easy to get your own domain name (this one is worth repeating)

How to register for a domain name

Please note that all domain names listed in italic are ficticious:
    1. Think of appropriate name for that suit the theme of your web site. For instance, an online dating service may find domain name like www.loveconnection.com, more desirable than say www.best-used-cars.com
    2. Search for domain name availability. Every domain name registrar will provide you with a search tool; although some search tools are better than other. You will have to do a lot of searches because a lot of domain name that you wish to have is probably already owned by someone else (very common).
    3. As you come across available domain names that you like, jot them down. Keep searching until you have about 3-5 different domain names to choose from.
    4. Choose a domain name and register it at a domain name ICANN Accredited registrar.

    Other factors to consider

    • Initially, you will want the .com version of your domain name. If your internet business takes off, you may want to consider registering other first-level domains (i.e., .net) of your domain name and perhaps even similar domain names to prevent mistaken identity
    • Use domain name registrar that will register the domain under your name under all contacts information (perhaps with the exception of technical contact). It should be clear that you own the domain name.
    • Use domain name registrar that provide good online account support.
    • Use automatic domain name renewal if you are planning to own the domain name long-term

The Old Way – Command and ControlAlthough workplaces and management styles have come a long way in the last decade, the command and control style of management remains common practice in many companies. This management approach basically means that employees are told exactly what to do, when to do it and even how it should be done. The manager is in charge, has all the answers, and fixes all the problems. It’s no surprise that plenty of people find this approach demotivating - and that workplaces with a command-control style are rated as pretty unsatisfying. When it comes down to it, none of us really enjoys being told exactly what to do, and neither do our employees. When people feel as though they have no say and are given no opportunity to contribute outside of their work tasks, then they switch off and become disengaged. The command and control approach is being phased out for a more collaborative and engaging style – a 'Coach' approach or being a manager-coach. This is a positive shift – as long as we are clear about what the new expectations of managers really are.Coaching – What does it really mean? The coaching profession has exploded in recent years, diversifying across many different fields and industries. All of these people are dedicated to helping others achieve their goals, improve aspects of themselves or their business, or move forwards from where they are today. In a work environme

In the last 5 or so years I have been 'working' from home, only the last year or so has it made a financial impact for us. I can finally say legitimately that I work from home, granted, I do about 5 different things from home, but at least two of those would also be positions in the 'outside world'. The first 4 years were spent researching, experimenting, failing, and ultimately, learning. There are alot of companies out there to work with from home, that really will pay you, and not for clicking links or reading emails you just have to sort through all the data to find the right company for you.To find the right work at home job for you, you need to ask yourself a few questions: * How much time do I have to work every day? * Am I good at selling, talking on the phone, writing, etc.? * and are you disciplined? There are more things of course to consider, but those are the basics. By Disciplined, I mean can you make your self get up every day and do what needs to be done if you don't have a set schedule? I am not disciplined, with one of the companies I work for you set your own hours, and that could vary by day. I had a hard time keeping up with such a loose schedule. That's when my newest position took over; I HAVE to work 9-5 Monday through Friday. Having a set schedule helps me, but not all. When looking for work from home jobs you will need to research, look at some message boards, blogs, etc. Once you have a position you are i
