I don’t know about you, but I have been bitten multiple times by SCAM/SPAM artists skillfully separating us from our hard earned dollars with extremely good marketing techniques.

It happens to all of us. We try not to bite, but the hook is so well baited. It comes from our collective need to expand our sources of income. We all want to succeed. We don’t have the resources to go into business for ourselves, so we look for methodologies that won’t cost us an arm or a leg; methodologies to produce cash flow.

I have a few irons in the fire myself. I am making a few bucks on autopilot. There are enough of those schemes out there. But, it’s never enough. We’re all a little greedy at heart.

That being said, there are opportunities for the honest marketer to make a good living on the internet. Information sells. Articles, eZines, newsletters, even Blogs are profit generators. Heck, you can even make a few bucks by putting up custom ‘404 Error’ pages. These are the pages you land on when you miss-type the URL, or it’s no longer in use. You can also do it with your “403 and 405 Error’ pages. Use the Error Pages to market your offers. Every little bit helps.

Membership sites are becoming the big opportunity. Membership sites fill a niche. So what is a membership site? It’s a website that sells monthly or yearly subscriptions to members who want access to the information and/or tools available in the site. They are relatively easy to set up. Be ready to keep your site fresh or you’ll be refunding subscriptions left and right. Your members paid their money for you to deliver information to them. Fresh information they can use in their daily lives or in their business. So don’t skimp on updating the content.

There are some open source locations available where you can download the membership site software for free. Locked-Area.com is one of them. The software takes a little skill to set up. I didn’t have much trouble, but if you just can’t get it to work you can find sources on their site to set it up for you for a really nominal charge. Don’t worry; I’m not getting any affiliate commission from them. It’s an open source site. You can buy an upgrade if you need the additional services. I’ve done well enough without them.

Placing banners or sites on the Traffic Exchanges is another way. Put your banners and sites on the traffic exchanges of your choice. All you have to do is to surf the exchanges a few times a week to build up credits. These credits will be used to present your advertising. In real estate this is called ‘sweat equity’. It works for marketing on the internet just as well.

By using a good autoresponder to get your suspects opted-into your list will protect you around any spam complaints. When someone fills in a form or a ‘Tell-A-Friend’ script their name and email address goes into your autoresponder. The autoresponder sends them a confirmation email in return. This gives them a chance to opt-in to or opt-out of your list. When they confirm their intention their name and email address goes into your autoresponder and it starts sending them the sales letters you have in your email queue. By confirming their intent you can’t be accused of spamming.

Some ISP’s WILL shut you down if you are only accused of spamming. It doesn’t matter whether you actually spammed the individual. They’ll cause you to lose a lot of business anyway. Disclaimers are worth every penny you invest to create! No matter how good your offer, plan, system, or product is, someone will not be able to make it perform. Spell out what constitutes a refund. Saying that you’ll give them their money back if not satisfied is great for the Mega-Mart. It’s not so great for the internet marketer. No matter what you do or how hard you work you won’t be able to satisfy everybody.

Last but not least is the trust factor. When you offer your lead a product or service they trust you to deliver it to them. Don’t scam or use slick techniques to separate your customers from their money. If your customers trust you then they’ll refer you. Trust builds Respect. It’s as simple as that. Treat your customers fairly and they will come back. Again and again.
