I am a teacher by trade, but about 3 years ago, I decided to make some extra money with a web site. I wanted to do something that would not interfere with my regular job. Selling and shipping product would not work since you need to provide customer service throughout the day. I had heard that an alternative to selling and shipping merchandise was affiliate marketing. In affiliate marketing you don't sell or ship product so there is no need to provide customer service. The way it works is that you get paid a commission if someone clicks on your affiliate link.

I signed up with Amazon.com and many other merchant's affiliate programs and featured them on my web site shoppingmatchmaker.com. For the first 6 months I made only a few small sales. Then things really took off. I learned how to optimize pages for the search engines and I also learned how to create lots of sales pages with lots of affiliate links. My income quickly shot up to around $1000 per month and it steadily increased as I added more pages, more links, and even a few more web sites. Things were going really good ($1500 per month) until about six months later in March of 2004. The search engines started omitting duplicate content and many of my pages no longer showed up in search results. I made adjustments and slowly scratched my way back up in the search rankings by modifying pages and creating more new pages.

Things again were looking good until December of 2004. At this point Google made a major change in its search algorithm that reduced the number of visitors to my web site by 60% overnight! Only my pages that contained some useful articles (rather than all affiliate links) survived this great purge.

It was at this point I decided to take a new direction. I focused my efforts on content-based sites that were monetized with Google AdSense contextual ads.
