Job Costing - Do You Know How?
What’s your job profitability? I meet with business owners every day that are unsure of their profitability at a company or job level. They “think” they are making money because they have a few dollars in their checking account. Having money in your checking account doesn’t mean you are profitable. It might mean you haven’t paid all the bills yet, so you have

    China Business Demands Common Sense
In the quest for the essence of doing business with China, Hong Kong is historically speaking a logical port of call. Business correspondences, documents, articles, etc. are written and received by people at all levels of expertise and education. The writer bears the responsibility of using the correct level of diction (words) and syntax (word order/structure) for the reader. When writing, ask yourself, “Who is going to read this?”

Answering this question will help you determine the readers’ needs. Do the readers have any expertise in the subject matter about which you are writing? What do you assume is the readers’ education level?

    Consider this scenario

A doctor of radiology has developed a new x-ray technique. He wants to write an article informing others of this innovation. He determines that he needs to write three different articles to three basic audiences as follows:

    • Journal of Radiology, read by industry experts with Ph.D’s +Specialization.
    • Doctor’s Digest, read by industry workers with technical through M.D.
    • Your Health Magazine, read by non-industry workers with high school and up education.

The radiologist scenario gives you an example of some fairly broad categories for a specific writing task.

When you write any correspondence, decide what category your audience falls into based on the readers’ expertise of the industry and the readers’ education level.

Just as the radiologist, you need to adjust your wording and structure to the level of industry expertise and education of your audience.

Change - Not Without Having a Break
Is it possible to change without having (using) a break? Words and Expertise Level

As the total knowledge base of humanity continues to increase exponentially, languages have an increasing number of industry specific words that are not necessarily known, or expected to be known, by people outside the industry. For example, you may or may not know words from the following list: Orchiectomy, Phrontistery, Stereotactic, Atavism, Gentrification, Veracious, Dactyloscopy, Etymology, Succinct, Cenotes, Veracious, or Verbigerative.

If you had received a letter that contained the sentence, “Rather than being verbigerative in your writing, you should strive to be succinct and veracious,” what would your reaction have been?

In letters sent between professor of linguistics at Harvard and Yale, such a sentence could be appropriate, but here’s a better sentence for most audiences that says the same thing: “Rather than repeating words and phrases in your writing, you should strive to be concise and exact.” Most people who receive business letters would be irritated with a company that sends out letters which appear to be efforts at showing language superiority.

Always try to identify your audience, and then try to put yourself in a reader's position. How would you react to what you plan to write? Check your technical level. Is it too high, too low?
