Casual Articles - Understanding Group Dynamics - Stages of Team Growth
Breach of Promise? I Could Not Believe my Eyes g!From My journal of May 08,06 I requested of the Lord that He would grant me all the promises He breached with my grand parents and my husband's grandparents. According to His word in Num.14:34 After the number of the days in which you searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall you bear your iniquities, even forty years and ye shall know my BREACH of PROMISE. In surrounding passages, the Lord destroyed most of His people because of their unbelief and their blatant disobedience. WOW, where does that leave us?Anyway He came good on His promised land with the grandchildren of the few who did obey and believe Him. That leads me to believe that we too can expect to receive the promise of abundant life with all that entails that our grandparents and parents lost out on.Now you say 'have you lost your marbles', you cannot accuse God in Heaven of a breach o Once the team comes together and starts to work together on what is, hopefully, a common goal or purpose, individual team members usually begin to deal with these issues. It is this act of beginning to work together, manage any conflicts (internal and external)and growing that has led to the commonly regarded 4 Stages of Team Growth 4 Stages of Team Growth 1. FORMING During this crucial stage it is normal that little progress will be made towards achieving the goal that brought the team together in the first place. I repeat this is normal. Moreover, individual team members will be looking towards the team leader for direction and g Should Freelance Writers Have a Minimum Wage? Before we actually look at what is commonly regarded as the 4 stages of team growth, it's worth spending some time understanding the team dynamics when, for exampleWith election season here, raising the minimum wage is a hot topic. This got me to thinking about freelance writers – severely underpaid professionals, in my humble opinion.Freelance writing is a profession where competition is fierce – so much so that many of us work for far below the minimum wage. So, I want to propose a minimum pay scale for web writing, as this is one of the most severely underpaid niches in freelancing. While I recognize that we live in a free market society, as professionals, I think we should at least have MINIMUM guidelines in place to begin to raise the pay standard across the board.Proposed Pay Scale for Web WritersFollowing are minimums that I think web writers should accept for assignments. My hope is that a standard will begin to be developed for this field (and all freelance writing).E-ZINE CONTENT: Why Does The Team Exist? Fairly obvious I suppose - to achieve a task, or set of goals that cannot be achieved by one individual - football team, task-force, quality improvement team, new department. I can see huge similarities between, for example, a sports person playing for their club side and their national team and a member of a department who is also seconded to an organizational quality improvement team. Think of it in the sense of the pushes and pulls in belonging to two teams especially when priorities are perceived to be different. I believe the same dynamics, the same issues, the same concerns can exist and if not managed carefully, will greatly inhibit the success or progress of any team. Unfortunately, in the cut and thrust of running a business, managing a department, coaching a team, these undercurrent issues are rarely talked through and yet everyone is surprised when the team doesn't achieve as everyone expected. The Undercurrents Team Member Identity Team Relationships Organizational Conflict As I mentioned, rarely discussed but just imagine if you have just set up a quality improvement team with members from six different departments and they are all asking these same questions but nobody is listening! Think of it in the sense of the pushes and pulls in belonging to two teams especially when priorities are perceived to be different.According to Dough McCormick, Chariman and CEO of iVillage, Inc, “Technologists focus on supply but they don’t understand advertising is focused on demand. Just because we have an available ad doesn’t mean we have to sell it.”What in the world does that mean? It means not every product online is going to sell. Online retailers and marketers are not going to succeed just because they are online. Marketing is about understanding the demand of the consumer and meeting it or creating demand for a product. This means online business people must take the time to understand the consumer. They need to develop an understanding of the consumer’s thinking, motivation, and needs. Just because you develop a website and slap up some product graphics and have a checkout process using paypal does not mean you’ll be selling and rolling in money. Is there a demand for your pr I believe the same dynamics, the same issues, the same concerns can exist and if not managed carefully, will greatly inhibit the success or progress of any team. I first encountered his thinking in a book he co-authored with Burt Nanus, Leaders: The Strategies for Taking Charge (1985). The book was based on in-depth interviews with 90 leaders, 60 from the corporate sector and 30 from the public sector. Bennis and Nanus believe that the distinction between a manager and a leader is crucial. Both are essential, but they are different. A manager brings things about, accomplishes things, and takes responsibility for conduct. A leader influences and guides the opinion of the group, its direction, its course, and its action. “Managers are people who do things right,” they state, “and leaders are people who do the right thing.” Managers tend to issues of efficiency, while leaders tend to issues of effectiveness. As Bennis and Nanus went over the interviews and their notes, they Team Member Identity Team Relationships Organizational Conflict As I mentioned, rarely discussed but just imagine if you have just set up a quality improvement team with members from six different departments and they are all asking these same questions but nobody is listening! Dubai is located in the United Arab Emirates and is not only one of the world's fastest growing cities, but is also an epicenter for employment and new job opportunities. It is estimated that around 30 new companies are established in this burgeoning city every week; and this has been the case since late 2002.But why is Dubai such an attractive city to live and work in? The short answer - Dubai is tax free. If you live and work in the area you are paid your gross wage with no tax deducted from this amount. Why? Unbelievably, direct personal taxation is against the law, meaning any income you make is 100% yours. If you are looking in the fields of tourism, IT, media or finance, and are qualified in your area, there is an abundance of job opportunities waiting to be snapped up. Every year, thousands of international people are making the move to Dubai to become part of th Organizational Conflict As I mentioned, rarely discussed but just imagine if you have just set up a quality improvement team with members from six different departments and they are all asking these same questions but nobody is listening! A group of women over 50 years of age dressed as pimps. Big red hats with feathers, boas draped around their shoulders, purple velvet suits, as gaudy as you can imagine. These ladies are no pimps. They are members of a popular women over-50 group, The Red Hat Society. The Red Hat Society beginnings started in a thrift store in 1997. Queen-Mother (official title), Sue Ellen Cooper, purchased a special red fedora. A few months later, Cooper gave a similar fedora to a friend, along with the poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph. In the "Warning" poem, Joseph writes about an older women in what eventually became the official "Red Hatter" uniform, red hat with a purple outfit. By 1998, The Red Hat Society was well on its way to spreading across the globe! What makes The Red Hat Soci Once the team comes together and starts to work together on what is, hopefully, a common goal or purpose, individual team members usually begin to deal with these issues. Moreover, individual team members will be looking towards the team leader for direction and guidance so it is paramount that he or she recognizes this as normal. What To Recognize Surprised that little progress is made? 2. STORMING This is the most aptly named stage. Individuals become increasingly impatient due to lack of progress and can be fearful of the organization and management. Co-operation can take second place to team members trying to push forward individually trusting more in their own skills and attributes. What To Recognize As team leader, the key, massive point here is that as tough as this stage is, it is still normal that little real progress is being made. However, also recognize that underneath it all team members are beginning to come together. Now the good bits... 3. NORMING This is the turning point, competition becomes co-operation, team members begin to value contribution of others, personal conflicts are minimized, ground rules are established and agreed to, roles and responsibilities are clearly defined and agreed to. What To Recognize As team leader it's a time to celebrate but not relax! The team's ground rules must be maintained, continue to support the team as real progress is made, continue to keep this 'cohesiveness' and sense of belonging, communicate significant achievements. Above all continue to help members work out any issues they may still have so that the team as a whole move to the fourth stage. 4. PE
