At the age of 36, Michael Abrashoff was selected to become Commander of the USS Benfold – at the time, the most junior commanding officer in the Pacific Fleet. The immediate challenges that faced him were staggering: Exceptionally low morale with unacceptably high turnover. Few thought that this ship could improve. In many ways, the Benfold was actually an extreme example of the same problems facing many organizations today.

As the new head of his own command Michael only became more resolved. “In my induction ceremony, my predecessor left to cheers. The crew was actually clapping as he and his family departed. I knew then that command and control leadership was dead.”

“A lot of people do whatever it takes to secure the next promotion. All I ever wanted to do in the navy was to command a ship. I did not care if I ever got promoted again. And that attitude enabled me to do the right things for my people instead of doing the right things for my career. Along the way, it was my people that created the results that ensured my next promotion.”

The solution was to establish a system of beliefs that Michael calls GrassRoots Leadership – a process of replacing command and control with commitment and cohesion by engaging the hearts, minds, and loyalties of workers.

    Ultrasonic Cleaning: High-Tech Cleaning Services
Are you looking for innovative ways to increase your services and your profit margins? Ultrasonic cleaning services can be a way for your cleaning business to add another income stream that can be highly lucrative. How does ultrasonic cleaning work? The item being cleaned is immersed in an ultrasonic tank filled with water and a small amount of cleaning agent, and then agitated with high frequency sound for a brief time. The item is then rinsed in another tank filled with water and a small amount of rinse-agent, and then dried. The underlying process is the creation of microscopic bubbles in the liquid. Agitation causes these bubbles to collapse with great force. This force produces shock waves up to 20,000 pounds per square inch. These waves then loosen and displace soil from the item being cleaned - this is called cavitation. Some of the advantages of ultrasonic cleaning include:-- Use of state o

It Is Important To Know Who You Are About To Do Business With - Before It's Too Late!
Checking the Better Business Bureau is good, but checking the person himself is better.Would you be willing to take an extra moment to check the background of your future employee? Who knows, you might discover some criminal past - people aren't always what they seem to be externally.Every serious business owner or employer uses background check services everyday, do you?If you don't then just think of all the news that we constantly hear about how a new nanny was torturing a little kid, or the caregiver who was hitting the old lady... Yes, this is very common especially when you hire somebody to work at your very own home - even the plumber, the lawn person, the roofer, the salesperson who wants you to buy something perhaps illegal and waits for your answer, or maybe even your personal trainer is a criminal and wants to kill you?You can check criminal records, the sex offender’s list, nann

    Business and War: Battlefield Leadership
Much has been written over the years about business. Much has also been written over the years about war. There are many parallels between the two. The more business people from the shipping dock to the executive suite view business as war, the more the spoils of war: success. The TroopsArmies since ancient times have not been known for selecting the best and the brightest. At times, the bulk of armies were criminals, debtors and drunks. How did these cast-offs of society become armies able to conquer huge areas of the world and win massive battles? Training and discipline. Businesses today are so enamored with the best and the brightest that they seem to forget about the importance of training and discipline. Forget this bunk about baby boomers, gen-X and gen-Y. For a competitive edge, a business would be well served to get good (not great) people and invest in extensive training and that discip

In his book, It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from The Best Damn Ship in the Navy, Michael states that, “The most important thing that a captain can do is to see the ship through the eyes of the crew.”

To Michael, this meant interviewing every single person on his ship, from the most senior officer to the newest recruit -- an experience that began to generate the most invaluable ideas, often from the most unexpected sources. For example, through one of these meetings Michael was able to address one of the most demoralizing roles of the crew: relentless chipping and painting had always been a standard task for a ship’s youngest sailors, the individuals that Michael most wanted to connect with. One of these sailors simply suggested replacing the rusting hardware with stainless-steel nuts and bolts.

“I took our credit card and bought the stainless steel hardware that day,” Michael commented. “Those guys didn’t pick up a paintbrush the rest of the time I was on board.” Today, the entire navy uses that process – a solution that began from GrassRoots efforts.
