Finding Employment As A Corporate Flight Attendant answer over the phone went like this: “WE’RE GOING LIVE.” “Mary, are you willing to go live right now”?I recently received a phone call from a very enthusiastic, if not perky, flight attendant who has been working in the commercial sector for several years. I could tell that the airliner end of flying was no longer for her; I also heard a certain excitement in her voice as she imagined herself flying within business aviation. Truthfully, it is this type of conversation that inspires me to promote our industry as I believe it is one of the best industries around.Unfortunately, the industry is also going through some difficult times. Compared to the mid to late 1990s, business remains down. Sure, there are people flying, jobs to be had, and money to be made. New contacts occur everyday and with a little initiative, the person may be able to close a sale or be referred to someone who may need it.There are many ways that a person can attract customers to one’s business. Some do this by launching a marketing campaign in the form of an ad in the paper or on a billboard. Some don’t use marketing at all and just flourish through word of mouth. On a more personal level if that person travels around, the best thing to carry and give out is a business card. This is what I dealt with recently when I was on the plane that had the shooting in Miami on the way to Orlando. I was the one who alerted the media within minutes of the shooting since I had been at the NBC Station in Miami that morning. When I realized that we were out of harm's way, I called my husband and told him that there was a shooting and that I was ok. Next, I called the NBC station; “This is Mary Gardner. (Pause) I was on your show this morning. (Pause) I am on American Flight 924 (Pause) And there’s been a shooting. When I realized that we were out of harm's way, I called my husband and told him that there was a shooting and that I was ok. Next, I called the NBC station;Strategies often fail in organisations because they are not successfully converted into actions that employees can understand and employ in their everyday work. The measures used to determine whether a strategy is working or not are usually far removed from what employees believe they can influence.Measurements of strategy implementation are usually restricted to the financial level. Measures remain at a high level and are not at a level disaggregated enough for employees to see for themselves whether they are contributing to the strategy or not.In the early 1990's Robert Kaplan and David Norton developed an approach, the ‘balanced scorecard', to provide “This is Mary Gardner. The company had a problem with the product sales because of the Japanese competitors. To solve this problem Xerox decided to compare their product quality and features to Japanese products. Ever since the process of implementing the best practices with the help of comparison is referred to as benchmarking.Benchmarking starts with the premise that whatever processes an organisation feels require a level of improvement, there are many organisations already achieving world-class performance. Businesses in the United States have lost their edge, if the flood of articles and reports on the subject are to be believed. But is the problem really competition for customers or a share of the marketplace? Or is it something else?A Focus on ScarcityWe could make a case that the real enemy of any business today is the focus on scarcity driven by fear. Fear of losing "the edge," of losing perceived global leadership, of losing profi “Yes… I’ll go live” And that was how it happened. From that moment on, I was reporting after we got off plane and I was borrowing people’s cell phones. I called and gave constant updates when I was allowed to use the pay phones. My own cell phone was dead so I couldn’t use that and I had to call my husband to get our calling card number before I could use the pay phone. As a result of my reporting, I ended up on Nightline, MSNBC, The Today Show, FOX, Geraldo, The Early Show, Good Morning America, CNN, and several other radio and TV shows.
