Swaziland has a number of beautiful mountains and rolling hills and the whole population of 1.1 million people are crammed into a space smaller than the Kruger National Park in South Africa so it is a little surprising that there are wildlife sanctuaries here at all. These are the top four National parks and game reserves in Swaziland compiled using travel reports by past visitors...

    1. Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary

Mlilwane was Swaziland's first conservation area and it was pioneered by the Reilly family in 1960. Today it is the most popular eco-tourism destination for both foreigners and locals. Warthogs, impala and ostrich roam around between the accommodation in the rest camp and the atmosphere is very laid back and relaxed.

You can enjoy a meal at the restaurant or take a drink on the verandah overlooking a water hole that sometimes contains hippo and crocodile.

    2. Mkhaya Game Reserve

This is Swaziland's refuge for endangered species and boasts four of the big five including the highly endangered black rhino. You can go on an open topped safari vehicle game drive that lasts from 10am to 4pm and get really close to the wildlife. Walking safaris are also available guided by local guides with excellent knowledge of the area and its animals.

Accommodation is in the rustic Stone Camp which features wholesome meals and traditional Swazi dancing beneath a giant sausage tree.

This is the largest protected area in Swaziland and it is held in trust for the nation by King Mswati III (who occasionally goes on a hunting expedition here). You will find the largest concentration of game in this park including lion, rhino, elephant and leopard.
