The Information Age, Make It Work For You
The Information Age. That is what writers and analysts have labeled the concluding years of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century.Throughout the time-line of history every great era has been given a name to identify the major achievement or advance in progress that marks that time period. Some that come to mind are the Ice Age, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the Industrial Age and now the Information Age.I don't know if the people of the time knew what age they were in or did future historians name it for them? Nevertheless, a great advance in the progress of man was achieved. Thanks to the Ice Age we can grab a cold beer anytime we wish. Wasn't ice invented during the Ice Age?We the people of the Information Age know it's the Information Age. We don't have to wait for future historians to give it a name. Why? Because with all the information available to us and all the leisure time we have to reflect on it, we know what to call it. Back in the other ages, they were so busy progressing that they didn't have time to think about what they were called. The micro-chip and the computer have revolutionized the way information is disseminated. Arguably we could make a case that the computer and not fire or the wheel has been responsible for the greatest advancement for mankind. Not too many years ago the library, wh

    Management Advice: The Third Option
The three main option come from the stock market. The stock market is a place where you have to think fast and a mistake can cost fortunes. Analysts feed the stock market with advices about individual titles. Any such an advice comes with a main action, this is either to Sell, to Buy or to hold. There are nuances between them and some analysts use a different terminology (this stock will outperform the market…) but BUY, HOLD and SELL are the main choices. The stock market is a very transparent market where an individual action is easily traced and benchmarked. This is completely unlike organization “markets,” where the initiation of a project, the purchase of a products or a new business development can not really be compared with another scenario.Yet the choices for the advisor are the same: BUY, HOLD or SELL.What also is the same is that most management consultants and advisors on one hand and market analysts on the other all share one feature: they are unbalanced in their overall advices; in the aggregation of financial market advices, BUY outweighs HOLD and SELL. Banks are reluctant to give a sell advice. For many obvious reasons. In the same line of reasoning, the BUY recommendations of the consultant will outnumber the SELL or at least the HOLD advice; there is no gain for the consultant, even if the best option for an organization is to keep the status q
The experiences of the technology companies in the last few years who failed to navigate the rapid changes brought about in their marketplace by disruptive flattening forces may be a warning to all the businesses, institutions that are now facing these inevitable, even predictable, changes but lack the leadership, flexibility, and imagination to adapt - not because they are not smart or aware, but because the speed of change is simply overwhelming them.

The Internet now makes this whole world like one marketplace. This infrastructure is not only going to facilitate sourcing of work to the best price, best quality, from the best place, it is also going to enable a great amount of sharing of practices and knowledge, and it’s going to be ‘I can learn from you and you can learn from me’ like never before. It’s very good for the world. And India has emerged as back office hub for all kinds of services for the world.

Two thirds of Fortune 500 companies have setup offices in India for this reason. Most think of its 300 million-strong well-educated and ready-to-spend-more middleclass as an opportunity of our times. It’s a market to capture, and a talent pool to tap into. Big multinationals are moving forward in that direction and it gives them a competitive edge. A competitive edge you wish you had.

Well, it’s finally time to compete with the global leaders. Time has come for every business to benefit from a new trend in global economy. Partnering with India. The global economy is going to drive more integration (of India into it) and integration is going to drive the global economy.

    PROFITS:
Let’s begin with why it makes sense to work with India:

    Quality
It used to be that work would go wherever cheapest labor is available. That is not the case with India. Sure, it’s cheaper than here but not the cheapest. More and more work is going to India because it provides good quality services at competitive rates. Thanks to the dot-com-bust, more and more companies in India are learning that quality brings return business. And there are plenty of clients who would outsource every aspect of their business that can be done remotely. Vast English speaking population sees outsourced jobs as gateway to better life. They come to work every day (and night to synchronize with us here) with such enthusiasm not seen for that type of work and reward anywhere else.

The drive for quality also brings Indians to US companies for products and services for their needs. If Dell, GM, Microsoft, and Citibank have benefited over past several years, I bet you will find clients keenly interested in your expertise now.

    Quick Proof of Concept
So, you are excited to be working on innovative new technology but have a shoestring budget to create a prototype. Welcome to outsourcing to India. Getting prototype done in India gives you a chance to evaluate the Indian partner without loosing your shirt. If you get next round of funding, you already know whether to continue working with same company or look for a better partner.

    Routine & Maintenance Work
To maintain legacy applications you have tried hiring consultants here and the one who lasted longest was with you for 6 months. It’s not worth the effort anymore. Most Indian companies would compete for your routine maintenance work for long-term and do it more efficiently and effectively for far less money. And remember since it uplifts their standards of living, they do it passionately.

    Productivity
If you find the right company to outsource your work to, you can focus your own resources on doing more of what you do better and stay lean. Your Indian partner can surprise you by doing more than just what you originally thought was possible to do remotely. Most of the time outsourcing increases your own productivity, increases sales, and increases customer satisfaction and loyalty. It builds value.

The other side of productivity coin is ramping up demand for leadership skills building, mentoring, and management consulting within Indian companies. Concepts nurtured and mastered by the US companies command high price from their counterparts.

    Quick ROI & Cost Savings
If it weren’t for saving big money for investors and stakeholders, businesses would still be dealing with labor associations on pay hikes for things that can be done at a fraction of the cost outside. The cost benefits of sending work to India can range from 20% to astonishing 70% sometimes. In all cases it’s the quickest route to ROI and that should convince your CFO to start asking why aren’t we doing it.

    PITFALLS:
Are you thinking everyone else is doing it and I should too? Sure. Like each new wave, just take some time to see if it’s really for you. Study all your options, do market research for services you plan to offer. Evaluate your Indian partner, and measure performance if you plan to avail their services. Here’s is list of things that can; and do; go wrong:

    Privacy
There is very little privacy in life of an average Indian. It is very common for people to ask each other salary they make and everything else that is not asked out of courtesy in the USA. If people do not worry too much giving such personal information, Corporations can hardly ensure privacy of your consumer data because companies are run by people.

Educating everyone involved and setting-up formal processes for handling sensitive information are keys to eliminate risks surrounding privacy. Learn to politely say ‘No’ few times a day if asked for information that you are not comfortable divulging.

    Overhead
Geographically India is farthest from us, twelve time zones away. When we are looking forward to a good start on any day they are tired of that day and simply retiring and vice-versa. When you find out something important during middle of the day here, they are probably dreaming about your finding (its middle of the night there) or having nightmares. You may have to wait to share it with the team in India.

If they have a question on your specification, you would prefer they send you an email instead of calling you when you are fast asleep. We all loose some time and productivity due to this overhead.

Face-to-face meetings are sometimes required to build team dynamics, but a daunting 20-hour flight followed by 5-day jetlag is definitely overhead. Best is to entrust them with responsibility and never micromanage.

    Honesty
When you say a simple word ‘couple’ you mean exactly two, in India it’s open to interpretations. When someone says a couple of our engineers are working on your problem it means some, it could be 2 or 3 or more. When you hire someone on hourly basis, it is hard to validate the number of hours or number of consultants they bill you for. 27 Exhibiting Do's and Don'ts
    1. Do: Research a show carefully before you decide to exhibit. Does this show attract a large number of people from your target audience? Tradeshow participation takes a lot of time, energy and resources. You don't want to spend them on folks who are unlikely ever to do business with you. 2. Don't: Be afraid to ask questions. Show organizers have all kinds of information that new exhibitors would benefit from knowing. Ask about attendee demographics, exhibitor's requirements, and what assistance you can expect from the show's staff. 3. Do: Start planning early. Regular tradeshow exhibitors routinely start planning their appearances twelve to eighteen months in advance. 4. Don't: Pass up the chance to visit other industry events before you exhibit for the first time. Make note of what exhibitors worked for you and what turned you off. What did you find to be effective? Can you incorporate those items into your own exhibit? 5. Do: Make a list of goals and objectives for the show. This list should be very specific. Do you want to generate $X in new sales, start a certain number of new business relationships, or spread the word about a new service offering you're introducing to the market? 6. Don't: Get sidetracked by what everyone else is doing - or by what peop

A Look at Industrial Air Compressors
Manufacturers and industry alike depend on the services of industrial air compressors. Most industries that use air compressors use high quality industrial-grade models. These models are different, more powerful and more expensive than ones that are used for lightweight jobs and for regular homeowners.Industrial air compressors can be fueled by either natural gas or electricity. Most industries use natural gas to power their air compressors. Even though both types of energy used to run these industrial air compressors can be costly, many businesses find that using natural gas as a power source greatly reduces their utility costs. Most industries use a two-stage type of air compressor for their needs. Generally speaking, this type of industrial air compressor is built for heavy-duty jobs. These offer a much higher level of air compression, as compared to smaller or compact models. Industrial air compressors usually also offer the ability to store unused air for future usage. These also can be more energy efficient because they run on a higher level of horsepower than other models; this increased usage of horsepower also creates a better working machine that is less likely to break down and requires less maintenance. As with the purchase of any type of air compressor, those purchasing industrial air compressors need to be especially cautious of safety and quality standa

    Desperate Housewives... What's For Dinner?
I count myself among the many desperate housewives who echo the daily question...What's for dinner? This all-encompassing question won't go away despite my desire that with a snap of my fingers a fully prepared nutritious meal is ready for consumption and on the table. Yet, thanks to the packaging industry and its proliferation of new product ideas, I'm less frenzied about this question than I used to be. Yes, believe me things have changed from my mother’s day when cooking healthful meals was a time consuming chore. Food marketers finally understand that good food need not equate to long hours in the kitchen.I love to cook; however, it seems there are not enough hours in the day to make the home cooked meals I grew up on. Real food prep used to be a lot of work. Now with many new packaging innovations the hard work is actually done for me. I use many of these new packaging innovations in an effort to save time and because they are good. Every week I scour the supermarket shelves for new offerings that make my life a little easier. I regularly try different products to see just how time saving they really are -- even if the price might be at a premium. Remember, time is money. This Thanksgiving I was happy to pick up the bags of prewashed, precut turnip greens. Ever spend a couple of hours stripping and washing greens? Not a pretty sight. How many of you

What To Do When You Get Caught Surfing By The Boss!
It has been a long morning and you need a mental break. You start thinking of your weekend plans and jump on your messaging program to make plans with a friend. You have the movie times and a chat box up on your screen and what happens, your supervisor walks up behind you! You think to yourself Murphy's law is in full effect. What do you do when you get busted surfing or chatting at work? The situation all depends on how you react and handle yourself. Here are some helpful techniques/excuses you may be able to use:1. I am looking for a job that pays more money. (the defensive excuse)2. Oh no! I need IT to come out, I have a blinking light that wont go away. (the play dumb excuse)3. Keep your company website minimized and maximize it fast when the boss comes by and admit you want to learn more about the company. (the cover-up!)4. You were investigating stuff for a surprise party you were planning on throwing for (who ever just walked in) and now the plans are ruined, way to go! (the guilt factor)5. I was just comforting a friend who lost a relative to bovinexctrementitis. (the compassion excuse)6. If you are lucky enough to hear someone behind you, ctrl/alt/dlt and enter to lock the comp when the boss walks up, then immediately turn to him and start discussing whatever project he has you working on. (the get-a-way)7. Look happy and say "Wow

    CONCLUSION:
India is a threat, India is a customer, and India is an opportunity. You have to internalize India to succeed. You cannot ignore it. Instead of competing with India as an enemy you break down your business and think about which part of the business you would like to do in India, which part you would like to sell to India, and which part you would like to buy from India.

Sending software, accounting, billing and any such work AND selling US products and services to India, is now possible for all of us. Whether you should do it, depends on your objective, growth, and need. Distance, communications, lack of information, and quality etc. should not be roadblocks anymore. You should choose your Indian partner diligently and audit them regularly.

About 60 percent of IT projects outsourced to offshore companies fail to meet the deadline and budget in comparison to moderate 23 percent of projects outsourced to local US companies.

Following are some pointers to improve your chances of success in working with India:

    · Discover the best way to specify your services, software or business process
    · Keep in touch with your outsourcing team without micromanaging
    · Communicate directly with development team by email, instant messaging, and telephone.
