    Know Your Club Distances

To consistently hit GIRs you need to know exactly how far you hit each club. If you don't yet know how far you hit each club, try this:

Go out and hit a whole heap of balls with your sand wedge (or highest loft club), and have the average distance measured (usually by a range finder).

So I'm just going to come straight out and say it:

The absolute most important thing you must do to lower your golf scores is to improve the amount of Greens In Regulation (GIR) you are hitting. You can have a super drive and flawless putting, but it's actually getting onto the green that most golfers need to work on.

Being able to efficiently get to the green means that by the time you get your putter out, most of the work has been done. But by efficiently, I mean you should be able to get onto the green in one shot once you are within 50 yards.

Now I know that is a hard ask for a lot of you, but here's the three most important tips that will help you improve your GIRs.

    Pick A Spot To Aim

Have you ever heard the saying: "If you aim at nothing, you'll hit it"? Well it's true, so you need to pick a spot to aim at... and COMMIT to it. Second guessing yourself will most likely result in a bad shot.

Also unless you're a scratch player, you are best to aim for a safe area of the green. For example, an open area that is forgiving should you miss-hit your shot.

    Think Ahead

A lot of the time aiming straight at the pin won't be your best option. It is important to plan ahead and set yourself up for the next shot. For example, we all know uphill putts are easier than downhill putts, so if it is possible, aim to land the ball 'above' the hole.

Then do the same for the next lofted club, moving up through all your irons, even to your woods if you would like. Write these on a little card to take out to the course.

Then when you are out playing a round, either use your rangefinder (if you have one, or it's not a comp) or just use the distance markers on the course to decide which club to use. You'll be able to hit more confidently when you know exactly how far the ball will go with each club.
