I have outlined below some of the causes of this cavalier (and costly) approach to business improvement along with how we might approach things differently. The latest thing! In business we are often worse devotees of fashion than any teenager. We undertake initiatives, programmes and structural changes regularly to follow the latest trends in management thinking. Think of business process re-engineering, lean manufacturing, web services, outsourcing, “off-shoring” - the list is endless. Now each of these have their place and can have a dramatic, and often very positive, effect on an organisation, but how often are they selected simply because they are what everyone else is doing or what the consultants are pushing this year? All of the activities listed above are tools to achieve certain aims and every organisation’s aims are unique.Don’t follow everyone else down the A1 if you are trying to get to Aberdeen!Busy foolsAlthough in some organisations bureaucracy can lead to action never being taken on anything, in many the How to Effectively Carry Out the Managerial Function of Directing There are a number of terms used in identifying the different areas of managerial process. These include leading, executing, supervising, ordering and guiding. But at the heart of the managerial process is the managerial function of directing since it is involved with initiating action. This function of management will put into effect the decisions, plans and programs that have previously been worked out for achieving the goals of the group.Directing concerns the total manner in which a manager influences actions of subordinates. First, it includes issuing orders that are clear, complete and within the capabilities of subordinates to accomplish. Assignments have to be defined to allow subordinates to think through the task, determine their level of authority, and allow them to ask questions and make recommendations. Outlines must likewise be provided to be used as guides and bases for evaluation or in building checkpoints. Second, it suggests an incessant training activity in which subordinates are given instructions to enable them to carry out the particular assignment in the existing situation. Remember the line that says "They haven't learned it until they can do it without you." Third, it involves the motivation of workers to meet t Business Owners: You Can Attract Top Talent Even In Tight Labor Markets Are you happy with the quality and quantity of job candidates you attract? If your total recruiting effort consists of simply placing a ‘help-wanted’ ad in the local newspaper you will often fail to attract the candidates you want. You need to take a more creative approach, especially in markets with low unemployment. You’ll also want to create powerful recruiting materials.A mistake made by many employers is to describe their job opportunity only in terms of what they require. They fail to explain why their company is a great place to work. You will more successfully attract the best candidates when you realize this truth—recruiting is a marketing activity. In tight labor markets this is especially true because your best potential candidates often currently have a job with someone else—your competition!Recognize that all potential job candidates have one question uppermost in their minds, “What’s in it for me?” When you skillfully answer that question in your recruiting materials you will attract both a better quality and higher number of candidates. If you don’t tell prospective candidates why your company is a great place to work and someone else who is recruiting at the same time does tell them, you will neve Using a Headhunter to Find a New Job Do you get calls at work from third party recruiters (AKA Headhunters) telling you they have the greatest career opportunity. Maybe you laugh at them, or at the very least don’t take them seriously. No matter what your opinion of them, Headhunters can be a valuable resource in getting you your next job. Many times you'll be contacted by a recruiter when you’re not considering a career change. You might be very content with your current employer. That’s good; however, what the recruiter might be offering is a career opportunity that’s better than the one you currently have. The next time a recruiter calls, don’t be so quick to get them off the phone. The few minutes you invest in a conversation could turn into a great job for you.So what should you do the next time a third party recruiter calls you at work? Here are a few suggestions.Find out as many details as you can about the company. Chances are pretty good the recruiter won’t tell you the name of the company, at least during this first phone call. There are some things you can find out that will help you decide if it’s the type of company you’d like to work for. You might ask the following questions: What is the size of the company, in terms of r Mixed bag in Economic Recovery for VT, NH and ME G
Northern New England is emerging from its economic recession steadily, no one is breaking any speed records but all is not down and out as predicted. Some industry sectors are blasting right along. New Nano and Bio tech are strong and people are getting high paying jobs, while others in the areas of VT, NH, ME are saying that summer vacation rentals are not doing looking so hot as one property management consultant told us. Although from what we could tell it looks good. Another income property owner confirmed this who owns properties along 95 all the way into FL. ME is not great, NH is not as good either and a few have given up this year. In NH a 3 bedroom, private dock and hot tub with two boats was going for only $2,000 per week on a lake that was last year and this year about $1800.00 some only $1200 per week; such a deal for a vacation. On the commercial side we are seeing Grubb and Ellis, Prudential, CB Richard Commercial etc. are inundated with properties and eager investors are looking to buy anything producing 8-10% in returns, which a few years back would be poor value and they would be uninterested. In MA, BioTech is getting a little boost from VC but very little else is drawing in funds for expansion.Healthcare is good, but not great
