    Leadership Skills For A Crisis
TIME. TIME. TIME is the main problem. Or rather, lack of time. Too little time to plan, to decide, to execute the plan.Your usual coping strategies, even your best ones, may not work in a crisis. New strategies for gathering information, judging its usefulness, and deciding on the best option are absolutely necessary. You've probably never faced a situation like this. That's why it's a "CRISIS". Otherwise, it would be a problem or a challenge, but not a crisis. For a problem or a challenge, you have a set of learned behaviors, such as: 1. gather the facts, 2. consider options, 3. choose the best, then 4. act. There is no need to be fast thinking, no time restriction. In a crisis, you need perceptual skills of a different order. You must be quick to look, listen, feel, and smell to gather the pertinent information for survival. In our culture, we've seldom had to do this. Maybe never before. Some practice helps.Once you've gathered the danger information, the exit information, the key pieces of the environmental data, you must quickly choose the best option, one you've never tried before, and then do it.Our habits, our usual mental patterns, probably won't work here. You can't take the elevator, and which stairs, up or down? Maybe the only exits are windows. Do they open? If not, how do you break the glass? What floor are you on? How high u

    12. Fired? The Interview Solution
So you were fired? Now what? How will you explain it when you interview? There are many questions that plague job seekers. “What salary are you looking for?” is a big one. “Why should we hire you?” is another. And “Why did you leave your last job?” can leave you spluttering if you were fired and don’t know how to answer. And most people don’t! After they’ve stumbled through a few answers—trying in vain to phrase it in an acceptable way—and are not invited back for a second interview, their fears are confirmed. No one will hire them because they’ve been fired.Except that’s not what’s really happening. The problem is not that they were fired, but how they answered the question. We don’t stay at a job our entire lives like most of our grandparents did. Not only is it common to change jobs, some believe it's the best way to leverage salary and career. While most of the changes may be of your own volition, odds are a few will involve being fired or laid-off. Companies are bought out, merge, and consolidate, which means inevitably there’s a duplication of staff. It can be as simple as the new president wanting to bring in his own team. He probably didn’t even look at your capabilities, He just decided you were …outta there. These departures aren’t as difficult to explain. You can say: “Our company was bought and the entire department was eliminate
Over the course of your business life you'll come in contact with a number of other business people. They could be lawyers, business services, suppliers, customers, etc. These people are important to your business in more ways than one. If you hired them or they bought your product or service, you can also gain their business knowledge, experience, ideas, and advice. How do you do this? Stay Connected! Network! Networking is when two or more different businesses stay in contact on a regular basis to build and improve each others business.

Consider all the benefits you'll gain from talking to other business people:

Knowledge or information that you didn't have before Advice on how to solve a current business problem Leads to a new business project or opportunity Joint ventures and cross promotion deals Learn important skills that you didn't have before Constructive criticism that improved your business Brainstorming that sparks a profitable business idea Encouraging and motivational statements

There are many ways to meet business people. Join business clubs and associations. Participate in on-line business-related forums, e-mail discussion groups, and chat rooms. Go to business expos and trade shows. Use your creativity to come up with even more ideas.

If you have the time, start your own networking group. You could hold meetings at a local seminar room, at a park , or at your own business building. If you want to hold meetings on-line use a private chat room. Publish a print or e-mail newsletter to keep members informed of meeting time and dates.

Keep all your business associates' contact information all in one place. Have it organized by business type or profession for easy finding. So when you need some advice on a new marketing campaign you can call that marketing expert you met at that trade show in Ohio a couple of weeks ago.

Networking is a surefire way to build a successful business. I have used it countless times and will continue too. I have also met a lot of business people who are now some of my closest friends.

    12. What Santa Knows About Marketing-
WHAT SANTA KNOWS ABOUT MARKETING...What's that ringing sound you hear at this time of year? It's the sound of store registers ringing up the sales generated by Santa Claus.Just because he's old, overweight, long haired and unshaven and dresses funny, don't overlook his marketing success. Santa is a marketing expert and you can become one, too, if you follow his marketing methods. What's that you say? You don't believe in Santa Claus or you don't celebrate Christmas? It's true that Santa may be mostly mythical, but ask almost anybody who Santa is and what he does, and they'll tell you. And there are millions of children who are convinced he's real. So put your doubts about Santa aside for a moment and take a look at why he’s so good at marketing.A. Knows How to Be Unique Whether it is his trademark red suit, his unconventional transportation, his belly laugh or his occupation, Santa is different. He's one of a kind, and makes quite an impression, one your unlikely to forget.B. Gets Free Publicity He's a master at getting press. He's mentioned in the media constantly during the winter holidays. Many songs, movies and books have been written about him.C. Is Customer Focused While everyone knows about Santa, his marketing isn't focused on his credentials. He rarely talks about how long he’s been in business nor does he bore people wi

    12. Reflections in the Glass Ceiling
The recent news about one of America's most powerful woman ceo's being removed from office has raised the discussion about gender bias, again. It disappoints me that in 2005, I still hear women clients talking about "the old boys' network". They say "glass ceilings" are holding them back in terms of advancement, pay equity, recognition and career satisfaction. While I have no doubt their assessments are valid; it's important that we don't generalize too much. There are other reasons as well.First, discretion is no longer the best part of valor. While Shakespearean wenches were prized for their discretion, professional women in today's competitive workplace are often held back by the very quality that is too often expected of women. So let me be clear on this: Women - working quietly and selflessly will not get you to that corner office! In my line of work, I still hear business professionals blaming the 'glass ceiling' for women's scarce presence in the executive suite. Research (and my own experience) shows that while the glass ceiling isn't completely cracked, it is not the main obstacle for women's advancement to the upper echelons of corporate America. The good old boy network (active as it is) is no longer what provides men the biggest advantage in the workplace.Men's advantage comes from their willingness to speak about their accomplishments, having le

    12. Securities Fraud - Stock Scheme That Uses Your Computer
Many of you may have been exposed to the original online stock scheme where spammers will send out stock picks on penny stocks creating buzz that artificially drives up the price of these worthless stocks. 12. Your Guide to Choosing the Best Folding Tables and Chairs
When you regularly utilize folding tables and chairs in a public setting - such as in a hotel banquet room, a school, a church, or a community center - they're likely to be subjected to extreme usage. The hinges on folding tables get a workout from being taken up and down regularly, while chairs can be knocked out of shape when they're being stacked up, set up, and dragged around a room. Because folding tables and chairs represent a substantial investment, if you're not careful in selecting the best folding tables and chairs for your purpose, your budgeted one-time expenditure may become a recurring expense. Whenever you shop for folding tables, you should keep these features in mind: Leg Design: The legs should be attached through the top of the table, ideally with bolts. Legs that screw into the top will eventually detach. Top Design: Look for high impact plastic or a polyurethane cast top that will allow the sides and corners of the table to absorb impact. Avoid tops with seamed edging or an attached bumper, as it will eventually detach. Safety Features: Look for leg mechanisms with automatic, rather than manual, safety locks. Choose folding tables with appropriate weight limits for your intended use. Guarantee: Choose a seller who will provide you with an unconditional guarantee for your folding tables and chairs for a p
