In our modern world we see so many figures who are supposed to be “leading” us. But where are they leading us? What does it really mean to be a leader? From what we can see the majority of corporations, leaders in governments, and other institutions seem to focus on what they want, rather then what the world needs. That is not an example of real leadership.

Real leadership is the true embodiment of the human spirit. It is selfless service, for the ultimate greater good. True leadership is exhibited when one realizes they are part of a much greater system then just their self. That all life is precious, delicate, and divine and should be treated in such a way.

Real leaders care more about the people they are leading then they do themselves. They know for whatever reason they were given their gifts, or put into the position they were put in, they have a choice to make. They could choose to live a life of selfishness, and exploit their followers for their own benefit. Or they could choose to live a life that gives back to the world in a much greater way.

The first option has resulted in uncountable wars, destruction, cruelty, and suffering for thousands of years. The second way has resulted in human beings who have spread love, life, hope, and wisdom. There are examples from each category, but truly the only thing that matters is what type of leader we want to be ourselves.

Do we want to improve ourselves, grow our heart, grow our love and feel more satisfied with our lives? Or do we want to focus on growing our possessions, growing our power, growing our status, and our collection of cars? That choice is the difference between a real leader, and a phony.

We do not all need to be Gandhi’s and Mother Teresa’s, but it’s the very little things we do in a day that show our true nature. The kind words we use, or the hurtful words we use. The smile and warm eyes we share with others or the hesitancy to make eye contact and cold faces make all the difference.
