How to Successfully Run a Business with Your Spouse without Sinking the Relationship
When I met my husband Blair Osborn in 1975, I had no idea that our chance encounter would fuel a 30-year partnership in life and business. As marriage and business partners, we understand that stress, aches, pains, and other consequences of busy lives give us all pause to seek more relaxation and rejuvenation in our lives. Making time for both is essential for us and the customers we are committed to serve.Through countless ups and downs over the years, there are several skills vital to the smooth functioning of any partnership. In no other endeavor is it more important to understand and master these skills than in a business relationship with your spouse. To follow are our hard won lessons that will serve others seeking to get into business with a marriage partner without sinking either the marriage or the business in the process.Commitment is the cornerstone. When Blair and I started our business, most people thought we were crazy. Still, we remained committed to our mission and vowed to stay with it. We quickly discovered that running a business required knowledge and resources we hadn’t yet acquired. We were generalists on a straight up learning curve to acquire instant expertise in everything. Our success also required a large amount of start-up capital. Acquiring these funds was risky and stressful. Other obstacles like emerging competition could have easily prompted us to throw in the towel, yet our commitment kept us afloat. Woody Allen once quipped that 80% of success is just showing up. Blair and I always show up, and that continues to make the difference, no matter what the circumstances.Trust combats confli

    Are You Franchisee Material?
As with any other organization, franchisors need to look for certain characteristics in applicants to determine if he is indeed right for the job. Candidates for priesthood must generally show their willingness to do away with the desires of the flesh. Army ranger candidates on the same line of reasoning must also show the correct amount of discipline, health and strength the job entails. For this reason, applicants of the franchise system must also show certain characteristics in order to be qualified family members of the organization.First and most important characteristic is the capability of the applicant to be good follower. As a franchise system is built upon the foundation of consistent and homogenous products and services, so must the applicant show the proper attitude needed to maintain these essential factors. As a franchisee, you must be ready to view your business as an automated money making machine, doing what its supposed to do with you acting as its maintenance man. Because of this, franchisors generally avoid free thinkers and opinionated people like the plague. After all, if you want to change so much of their proven system, why bother them at all when you are more than welcome to make your own?Franchisees must also be able to lead the people under them in the business. This means that while on one hand, the franchisee must possess sufficient charm and personality to engage the customers and the employees; he must be ready to discipline and control the bad attitudes and bad performance of his employees. Franchisees must show sufficient people skills as meeting and negotiating with people will be an integral part of bein
Marketing has traditionally been broken down to a formula known as “the 5P’s” – the five factors that make up an organization’s marketing strategy. If these are done consistently, well, and for a long enough period of time, these 5 factors also become part of their brand.

So far, so good. But the problem is that no one can seem to agree on exactly which 5 P’s are important, so the list typically includes: people, product, place, process, price, promotion, paradigm, perspective, persuasion, passion, positioning, packaging, and performance.

Wow. Sounds complicated, huh? I’m going to try and simplify effective marketing into five moves – five concrete actions – that you can implement immediately. Your challenge: try one or more of these NOW.

    Lean Manufacturing
Lean manufacturing is a business performance improvement tool that focuses on enhancing quality, cost, delivery, and people. It helps expose waste and makes continuous improvement possible by identifying and eliminating non-value-adding activities in design, production, supply chain and management.Striving to improve competitiveness by providing customers faster and better products or services, which will accomplish more than worrying about the next global crisis, is the basic aim behind lean manufacturing. The only game we need to be adept at today is the one that removes waste so the customer sees more value. In the world of lean manufacturing, companies try to produce only what has been demanded by the customer, and only when the product is required. To optimize benefits of lean throughout the supply chain, it is essential to build a partnership with your suppliers. This partnership must work on the basic principle that you pull only what you consume, and nothing more. Your suppliers restore what you have consumed. In this way, inventories are maintained at their smallest for both dealer and customer.Achieving this level of trust with your supplier will require frequent communication and extensive sharing of information. Successful partnerships result from inviting each other to strategic planning sessions, attending each other's events and participating in other joint activities.Unlike many manufacturing trends, lean manufacturing appears to be here to stay. However, many firms are still struggling to figure out how to make lean manufacturing work for them. The title itself implies that companies will emerge from the program lea

Top 7 Things to Look Out for When Buying a Franchise
Buying a Franchise is a complicated business investment. Generally the way most franchising agreements stand in modern day business you are leasing a business rather than buying one for a specific term. Most consumer awareness websites and even the government regulatory bodies recommend before taking the plunge and buying a franchise that you have a Franchising attorney look over the Uniform Franchise Offering Circular or UFOC. This is the required disclosure document that franchisees must be given 10-days prior to the sale. Some of the terms and conditions of a UFOC may seem rather onerous and yet these clauses and terms more often than not allow the Franchisor to maintain consistency, quality and brand name of all the franchised outlets and are indeed necessary. Nevertheless there are some adverse clauses, which can be hurtful to franchisees if a dispute arises or a default in the franchise occurs. It is important that you understand this going into the agreement.Never lie on a franchise application, indeed over 50% of the franchise application we had received online, via fax or mailed to us included lies from franchise buyers. Am I crazy?

Maybe, maybe not. The other side of the coin is that maybe YOU’RE crazy for not charging for VALUE, but instead competing on PRICE. Businesses that compete on price lose. Period.

The easiest thing your competition can do is undercut your price. In fact, the first thing they will copy is your price. It takes no imagination, no creativity, no innovation, no market leadership, and no vision to lower the cost of something. And it hurts all parties involved. Lower prices always mean lower profits. Studies have shown that a 1% drop in price leads to an 8% drop in profit.

What happens when you double your usual price?

    Several things. Prospects perceive:

    * An increase in the value of your product/service
