Concrete and Masonry Work: OSHA's Top Violations
What are the most frequently cited serious violations of the concrete and masonry standard? The following are OSHA’s top four followed by suggestions and protective measures you can use to make your jobsites safe.1) Failure to protect employees from impalement - rebar not capped or covered. Make sure that all rebar is capped/covered with an approved protective device designed for this purpose such as the hard plastic mushroom type caps which are designed to fit various sizes of rebar. Plastic or paper cups, orange traffic cones or tape are not acceptable means of protection. Prevent or limit your employees from working in areas where they could fall into or onto reba

Focus or Diversify - Which Path Should YOU Take?
This week I have attended three seminars and listened to several other speakers on the subject of focus and diversify. There is a large amount of information about focusing on one thing to make your business grow. I fully agree with what they have to say, however, I also fully agree with those that say diversify to grow. The real challenge is "how do you do both" so your business stays on track. It may not be as difficult as you think. In my business, I consult with organizations in a couple of ways, first as an outsourced training department, and second as a professional that helps them see where the gaps in their achievements lie. This may seem like two widely differe
Some people decide they want to start their own home business and know exactly what sort of business they want. Many other people who want to work at home have no idea what sort of home based business might be suitable for them.

If you fall into the second category, it makes sense to look for a product or service people need and then decide whether you could provide it. Another way of finding your own little niche business in a big competitive world is to examine your skills and think about what you enjoy doing. Sometimes, people don't even have a vague idea about what they could do to work from home and they come across their ideal opportunity by accident. That's what happened to me, but my friend Mick's story trumps that: he didn't even plan to start a business, it was all an accident.

Mick is one of those people who can fix anything and it seems like he can make most things from scratch. If you need anything fixed from your wristwatch to your motor-cycle to your curtains (yes he sews as well), Mick's your man. I don't think Mick and his wife have ever needed to pay for any work on their house. ISO 9000 Procedures
The basic ISO 9000 procedures include document control procedure, records procedure, internal audit procedure, control of non-conformance procedure, corrective action procedure, and preventive action procedure. Documentation is a basis upon which an ISO-compliant quality system is constructed. An unauthorized change in any information makes problems. Your mandatory document control procedure must define how you approve documents, update and re-approve amended documents, prevent the inadvertent use of obsolete documents, and ensure that documents are available where they are needed.A mandatory records procedure is needed to specify which records are kept, by whom, for how

Municipality Prefers Vertical File Storage Systems
When Tom Fujiwara, Assistant Public Works Director for the City of Redlands, California, needs to study plans for street repairs or review a map of his city’s storm drain system, he locates and retrieves large documents more quickly and efficiently than ever before by using the department’s new vertical file storage system.“We chose vertical file storage systems because they work. It’s that simple. The cabinets don’t damage our documents and they are very, very easy to access,” he explained. Before adopting vertical file storage systems, the city’s thousands upon thousands of pages of large drawings, maps and exhibits required by the department were stored mainly in flat

A Word about War and Fear and the Role of the Business Person
It is easy to get caught up in the bloodshed and threats to our security, no matter where in the world we live. However, being American can be doubly difficult since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the tragedy of 9/11, where as the world's only Superpower we are caught up in every web of tragedy that the world spins. And with the knowledge that terrorists aren't weaker since the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq but instead are growing stronger, evidence Hezbollah's ability to destroy an Israeli ship and strike its third largest city by missile, the fear that danger sits on our shores and laps at our coastal communities is real and growing. So, what is an American busines

Super Size Your eBay Sales Using Buyer Psychology
eBay sellers can place themselves at a big advantage by specializing in hot products. But to find these hot products they need to understand the mentality of eBay shoppers.eBay shoppers are guided by their desire to save money, be entertained, and gift giving. Many customers buy on eBay to take advantage of price savings not offered in the offline world. To win over these customers you need to focus on merchandise which you can sell at a drastic discount off of the original retail price.eBay customers looking for entertainment are either searching for hard to find items, are collectors, or are motivated out of curiosity. You can combine these needs w

Before you get to thinking I'm trying to sell you a superman here, I'll tell you Mick isn't perfect: he can't cook and won't try. His wife swears he'd live on sandwiches if she wasn't there, and I have no reason to think she's making that up. Mick says he doesn't have time to learn to cook and I guess that's true.

In his day job Mick worked for years at one of the biggest museums in London. I must confess to not really knowing what he did, but I gather from other friends it was something scientific and very clever. He didn't talk about work much at all really, there were always too many other things going on - like sampling his home made beer or dashing down to the coast to work on some improvements to his boat. It was only after Mick retired from his full time job that he became aware of his hidden talent and it surprised us all when we found out about it.

Mick and his wife had always planned to dedicate most of their time following retirement to sailing. I'm not saying they are fair weather sailors but there are months when the weather can transform pursuit of a passion into a punishment. Retirement's supposed to be enjoyable -right? It was during their first winter at retired persons that Mick started spending a lot of time in his worksh
