Yet have you managed to meet a smoker motorist who admits to doing either of these things? No of course not. In society we are quick to blame other people, but very slow to actually admit that we have the same failings. In my work as a physician, I often come across children who have respirited diseases. One or either [or both] of their parents will often smoke, yet they swear blind that they only smoke outside of the house when the children are not present. Why, then, do their children smell of cigarette smoke? Can they not smell it themselves? Do they really think that we physicians are so poorly trained and so inadequately provisioned that we cannot detect a lie when it is told?

The mere fact is that people like to do things in a way that they can say that they are whiter than white. They find it hard to admit that they in fact are the cause of or a contribution to degradation in society and damage to the environment or to people’s health. That is, I’m afraid to say, as far as smokers fascinate me.
