Career Advice: 10 Tips For Your Career
The best career advice I can offer is to always think about the long-term. When planning your career, it’s usually best to think about the long-term outcome rather than focusing on a short-term gain. Also, when it comes to career advice, always consider the source. There is far too much career information available that comes from people who don’t know what they are talking about. Look out for people who are advising you about the “hottest jobs of the year” and other here-today-gone-tomorrow advice that focuses on the short-term and simply reflects their opinion, not fact. Here are ten rules to live by when planning your career: 1. I will constantly update my resume so that I am always ready to apply for a job when it arises.2. I won’t change jobs simply for more money. If I wanted more money I’d ask for a raise.3. I will take the advice of others with a grain of salt and always remember that it’s my career not theirs.4. I will always try to keep learning and will constantly look for opportunities to improve my skills.5. I will always remember the importance of a good work life balance.6. I will take control of my career and any job search I undertake and will not rely on other people to do it for me.7. I will not allow other peo

How many times have you and your company, debated and fought over the potential outcomes of a particular pricing strategy, only to have seemingly random, unpredictable factors rear their ugly heads? How many analytical tools have you used: game theory, forecasting, market research, decision-tree analyses,… only to realize that none of these was able to help predict much beyond the next quarter or less. Welcome to our wonderful world of chaos!

So what is happening? Just as in the movie, Jurassic Park, industries evolve in a very dynamic way given complex interactions. As in nature, very small disturbances can lead to significantly different outcomes- a reflection of a chaotic system.

Briefly, chaos theory considers nonlinear systems. In a linear system, if I do A then I know that B will happen and C will happen as a result of this. But, according to chaos theo

    Choosing A Career
So many new, college freshman find themselves in an awkward position…choosing a major. These barely 19 year-old kids are asked to make a decision about what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Naturally some squander away the time undecided while others plow through some technical field without any real understanding of what career awaits them. The fact is that only one out of five students will actually continue in the field that they chose to study in college. Most students choose a major based on the amount of money they think they can make or the popularity of a particular degree plan. Their interests and passions usually take a back seat to the idea of money and popularity. But what else can we expect of our late teenagers? The average American citizen changes career paths at least three times. Why is there so much pressure for college freshman to figure out what they want to do for the rest of their life, when odds are, they will change their minds in a few years (if not sooner). People are the most successful in their careers when they truly enjoy what they do and do a good job. It is most important to find your strengths and skills and attempt to find a job that includes those things. At nineteen, most people are not really sure what they are especially good at. They

Change Management Disruptions of Your Competitors
We have all heard a lot about change management and it seems to be a buzzword that is being kicked around in management schools at top universities. Change management interruptions can cause chaos in a Corporation and it is this reason that Change Management is discussed in case studies at MBA schools. One thing that is not talked about very much is how change management disruptions affect your competitors and how you can take advantage of them. In my younger days I use to race motorcycles; street bikes, the ones that go really really fast and you put your knee on the ground sometimes at 135 plus miles per hour trying to stay balanced. Well, one thing I learned is it pays to be lucky, practice your skills and fundamentals and watch for your competitors make mistakes. One thing they teach you in racing schools with super bikes is to use the whole track. In business you must use all possible strategies to win the game. If your competitor makes a mistake you need to capitalize on that mistake, just like you do in racing or competitive sports. In the marketplace changes in management of your competition can cause times of indecision, mistakes and these disruptions indeed will slow the company down. It behooves you to pay attention to what the competition is doing and when

Job Search Lessons from the 2006 Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is a game but, like sports in general, it offers useful life lessons that we can take with us . . . if we only look below the surface. As I watched the game, I saw a number of things. How many did you see?1. As I pointed out last year, winning is a team effort. That was never more obvious than this year when the Steeler offense was going no where for most of the first half and the SeaHawk offense was moving the ball almost at will. All of the focus prior to the game was on the offenses and, in particular, the match up between the quarterbacks. But Pittsburgh’s Roethlisberger started horribly, piutting pressure on the defense. Seattle moved the ball against the defense but could not “seal the deal” with points as John Madden said diuring the game.In his post-game comments, Coach Cowher spoke about the team effort that went into winning, in particular the coaches who put in an enormous effort all season long to adapt to the chages that kept occuring all season long.Who are your coaches or are you trying to do everything by yourself? Champions take coaching from the staff who are able to look at their performance and offer good advice that the pro adapts to. Wouldn’t that be helpful in your career planning?2. Excitement is a great motivator; fear isn
iefly, chaos theory considers nonlinear systems. In a linear system, if I do A then I know that B will happen and C will happen as a result of this. But, according to chaos theory, a number of variables will change what happens between A and B and then between B and C. Again, as in Jurassic Park, a butterfly may flap its wings and its rains in Central Park. There are a few points to be aware of when thinking about the impact of chaos on pricing: There are deterministic relationships between the participants in a chaotic system but only patterned outcomes and not predictable, outcomes result. In the business world, outcomes reflect very complex underlying relationships that include the interaction of several potentially chaotic systems; crop prices for example, are influenced by the interaction of economic and weather systems. While, chaos theory provides guidance on cr
