    The Musketeer Approach
Stories of intrigue, treachery, politics, lies, double crosses, and power struggles fill the history books, much like they fill today’s headlines. In the world of the 17th century musketeer, life depended on who you could trust. In the world of the 21st century employee, one’s livelihood may.   I’m not na?ve to corporate politics, competition, or sabotage in

    Six Tips for Developing Employees
According to a recent poll of HR professionals, only ten percent of managers are fully prepared for the next level. Given this information, is it really a surprise that approximately fifty percent of promotions fail (source: Corporate Leadership Council) when the selection decision is based on current performance level? One of the most important qualities of a good leader is the ability and desire to develop their employees. Taking an active role in the development of your team demonstrates confidence and concern for the future of the organization. Although talent development should be part of a company-wide initiative, most of the responsibility falls on the shoulders of the supervisors.
Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a proven tool. Well suited for a broad range of industries and processes, VSM is ideal for creating positive organizational changes, developing efficient future states, and producing system-wide benefits in cost, quality, and flexibility. In short, it helps eliminate waste.

But like any tool, VSM must be applied properly. That means avoiding the common errors that invalidate the mapping process. Below are tips on developing an accurate VSM. These tips will not only improve the accuracy of your map and facilitate the mapping process, they’ll also help you reap its system-wide benefits.

But first, let’s define a value stream. It includes all the activities required in bringing a product from “raw materials” into the customer’s hands or in providing service to a target audience. Michael Porter, author of Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance, was among the first to talk about value chains and value streams. In his definition of a value stream, he includes primary activities, like inbound logistics, and support activities, like procurement. Porter relates these activities to gaining a competitive advantage.

One key to value stream mapping suggested by Porter’s definition is to clearly define the product or service to map. In other words, make sure you have a value stream to map before engaging in the process, since the objective is to identify system-wide waste occurs and then remove it. Unfortunately, some apply VSM in situations where there’s no product or control part, such as in product development processes. Professional Yellow Page Advertising Design Assistance; Do You Need It?
Having been involved in the franchising industry I have seen a lot of well-intentioned advertisements that simply did not pull and often I would cringe when I looked at some of those ads. But it was not just our franchise company franchisees that needed help, truly it is most all small business people. We finally instituted a plan that our franchisees had to fax us a copy of their ad 24-hours prior to sending in for publication, if they did not hear back from us in 12-hours it was automatically approved. The turn around had to be fast, as we did not want our franchisees to miss a deadline or marketing opportunity and we know people wait until the last minute. Also we wanted sales and for them

Don't Let Your Hiring Practices Turn Into Your Maginot Line
Every business wants to be secure. No business wants to lose money. To offset the current and future threats to security or capital loss, modern businesses large and small spend tens of thousands, even millions, installing video cameras and metal detectors. They hire security guards and order employees to carry identity cards. They monitor activities and wrap barbed wire around the parking lot. From a technological standpoint there is no end to efforts to secure data files and proprietary content. No industry lives without fear of crackers and hackers, vying to steal vital computer codes, bank accounts, and credit card information. In response, myriad companies are producing their vers

    The Value Of Safety Videos
Safety videos can provide many excellent resources for you and for your employees. What are they and how can they help your organization? First, realize that safety videos are full of valuable information. They can teach and provide that information on just about any safety related topic quite simply. And, more importantly, effectively. If you have problems with workmen's compensation or employees following state and local safety regulations, consider the purchase and installation of various safety videos. For example, one of the most common workmen's compensation claims has to do with back pain. Most of the time, people do not realize that there is a good and a bad way to lift heavy it

Non Profit Group Fundraising; Best Dates and Time for Car Wash Fundraisers
If you are considering a car wash fundraiser for your nonprofit group or organization you need to consider the dates and the Times. It is very important not to have a car wash fundraiser on a three-day weekend or holiday week. There will be less attendance and it will be harder to get the kids to volunteer to help because many of the parents will be taking them out of town to visit grandparents or friends. The best time and date to have a car wash fundraiser would be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and it does not make sense to start the car wash fundraiser earlier than that because there might be an overcast day and you will use up all of your towels because the cars will not drip dry as f

Another key to developing a VAM is observing performance first hand. While many value streams are simple, many are also complex. In some cases, the production process or service delivery effort is long and tedious. It other cases it maybe set aside for a few days or a few weeks or the person developing the process needs to complete the map quickly. All of which makes developing a value stream map difficult.

In addition, much of what takes place in the day-to-day operations of a business— phone calls, interruptions, reprioritizations of work—isn’t stored on a computer or in someone’s memory. So depending on engineering standards to fill in the information boxes and determine potential savings won’t work, nor will trying to develop a map while sitting in your office. While the Map might be technically correct, you would be missing many of the activities actually happening on the floor.

Unfortunately, these activities affect production time and the product’s value. Therefore, you must observe the product as it is being produced or the service as it is being delivered to determine which activities add value and which do not. While it’s sometimes hard to do, it’s critical to gathering accurate data for your VSM. Otherwise, you’re creating a process map, not a value stream map.
