Especially in hospitals, nursing care facilities, and clinics, where nurses may care for individuals with infectious diseases. Being able to care for a patient and at the same time acquiring a firm base of scientific knowledge are indispensable elements of a nursing career.Individuals considering nursing should carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of enrolling in a BSN program, because, if they do, their advancement opportunities usually are broader. Pros and Cons of Six SigmaOur experience as customers offers great instruction into the concept of branding. Come with me on a recent “experience” and you’ll see what I mean. Here’s the situation:I want to order an 800 number. On my AT&T bill is a customer services number. I call it. A voice mail gives four options. None of which I want. Just TRY to get a representative. I am instructed to dial another number. I am given three options. Hit 0 for operator and the disembodied voice says I have called after hours. The hours are 7am - 10-pm Monday- Fri. Eastern Standard Time.Fine. It is now 4am Monday in California. They should be open. By 4:30am in CA I have called repeatedly and punched in all the prompts until I am ready to punch someone. I Six Sigma is a business strategy that seeks to identify and eliminate causes of errors, defects or failures in business processes by focusing on outputs that are critical to customers. It is a measure of quality that strives for the near elimination of defects by using the application of statistical methods. A defect is defined as anything which could lead to customer dissatisfaction. The fundamental objective of the Six Sigma methodology is the implementation of a measurement-based strategy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction. When the Six Sigma approach was introduced to many organizations, the initial reactions included a lot of skepticism, such as: • It is another quality improvement initiative or flavor of the month • There is nothing really new in Six Sigma compared to other past quality initiatives • This too shall pass like others • It is an ‘old wine in a new bottle’ • This won’t work in our business • We are doing Six Sigma already • It is nothing more than a hype • It is not for us as Six Sigma requires complicated statistical methods However, the following aspects of the Six Sigma approach were not accentuated in previous quality improvement initiatives: • Six Sigma strategy places a clear focus on achieving measurable and quantifiable financial returns to the bottom-line of an organization. No Six Sigma project is approved unless the bottom-line impact has been clearly identified and defined. • Six Sigma strategy places an unprecedented importance on strong, passionate leadership and the support required .for its successful deployment • Six Sigma methodology of problem solving integrates the human elements (culture change, customer focus, belt system infrastructure, etc.) and process elements (process management, statistical analysis of process data, measurement system analysis, etc.) of improvement. • The Six Sigma methodology utilizes the tools and techniques for fixing problems in business processes in a sequential and disciplined fashion. I began delivering newspapers in the neighborhood, was a stock boy at a local children’s clothing store, and did various jobs throughout college. I began full-time employment when I graduated in 1970 and have worked ever since. My last job lasted nearly 25 years. Since college, I’ve been in advertising and marketing, which matched my degree. It had its ups and downs, but was mostly economically rewarding and emotionally satisfying. Every workday, I would get up and think about what the business world would hold for me in the next several hours. For the most part, it was something to which I looked forward. But there were other factors involved. No Six Sigma project is approved unless the bottom-line impact has been clearly identified and defined.Too many organisations search for a "silver bullet" to fix their human resource problems. They search for a singular, narrow approach to improve performance when a broad holistic approach is required. The result of focusing on a narrow approach to improve performance is unintended consequences delivering reduced performance instead. For the human resources of an organisation to perform well, the organisation needs to have four synchronised building blocks. The building blocks are goal setting and strategy development, performance management, process management and the organisation culture.Goal setting and strategy development are important in providing individuals and teams with their reason for turning up to work each day • Six Sigma strategy places an unprecedented importance on strong, passionate leadership and the support required .for its successful deployment • Six Sigma methodology of problem solving integrates the human elements (culture change, customer focus, belt system infrastructure, etc.) and process elements (process management, statistical analysis of process data, measurement system analysis, etc.) of improvement. • The Six Sigma methodology utilizes the tools and techniques for fixing problems in business processes in a sequential and disciplined fashion. The other 25% is made of unfortunate victims of lay-offs or company restructuration. Those have less chance of succeeding because success is first and foremost a matter of attitude. Based on some studies, only 10% of people are made to be an entrepreneur. Are you one of them?Do you know how to sell yourself? Do you know your market? Do you have a good network of contacts? Can you handle the risk of having no revenue for a while? These are all questions you should ask yourself before making the big jump. The first victim of building your own job is th • The Six Sigma methodology utilizes the tools and techniques for fixing problems in business processes in a sequential and disciplined fashion. Each tool and technique within the Six Sigma methodology has a role to play and when, where, why and how these tools or techniques should be applied is the difference between success and failure of a Six Sigma project. • Six Sigma emphasizes the importance of data and decision making based on facts, rather than assumptions and hunches! Six Sigma forces people to put measurements in place. Measurement is considered as a part of the culture change…What gets measured, gets done!! Just like any other quality improvement initiative we have seen in the past, Six Sigma has its own limitations. The following are some of the limitations of the Six Sigma approach, creating future opportunities for research: • The challenge of having access to quality data, especially in processes where no data is available to begin with (sometimes this task could take the largest proportion of the project time) • The right selection and prioritization of projects is one of the critical success factors of a Six Sigma program. The prioritization of projects in many organizations is still purely subjective. Very few tools exist for prioritizing projects and this should be the major thrust for future research. • The statistical definition of Six Sigma is 3.4 defects or failures per million opportunities. In service processes, a defect may be defined as anything which does not meet customer needs or expectations. However, it would be illogical to assume that all defects are equally bad. For instance, a defect in a hospital could be a wrong admission procedure, misdiagnosis, misbehavior of staff members, unwillingness to help patients when they have specific queries, etc. Assumption of 1.5 sigma shift (standard improvement) for all business processes does not make much
