How does it take five years to get rid of a wedding? We weren’t even excessive; we kept costs down, we had our parents pay for various portions, we didn’t even have to pay for the church or the clergy. We probably only had about two or three thousand on the card in the first place. But, like most Americans, that wasn’t our only credit card debt. We aren’t completely out of debt. We still have three large bills left – a personal loan from my husband’s uncle that predates our marriage, the money we still owe on our van, and my student loans, all totaling about 30 grand. But we’ve also gone through three bouts of unemployment in the past five years, two of them in the last 18 months, which have wiped out our savings over and over and over again. Plus those three kids. And we’ve cut up the credit cards and are in the process of rebuilding our savings.
The plus, of course, is that on a salary of about $40,000, we paid off over $6000 in debt in four months. With three kids and two house payments. Then of course, we hit the latest batch of unemployment and have been essentially jobless for the last three months. But with that kind of work, we are confident we can take the rest of the debt out quickly once we have a paycheck.
