Fashion Design Degrees Create a Pattern for Success
Abbey Swisher didn't necessarily want to become a fashion designer or consider fashion design degrees to be her forte in college until she was studying interior design and took an elective in fashion. "I just started to sew, and kept sewing and sewing," she recalls. "I'd come into class with outfits I had made, and people would be like, 'Abbey, why don't you become a fashion designer?'"She took the hint, switched majors from interior design, and began taking fashion design courses at Virginia Marti C

    Murder Mystery Dinner Fundraisers
A murder mystery dinner theater fundraiser is a fun way to raise funds. Here's how to host a murder mystery as a fundraising event. First, you need a location and that choice is critical to your success.Your location must combine good food with exclusive use of the facility because your theater performance takes place in acts divided by dinner courses. You don't want other restaurant patrons coming and going during the critical scenes, so it's best to book a reserved dining room at an inn or a large
Tom is a childhood friend of my brother’s. He lived about four houses from us since our junior-high days, and the guys have been friends for years. After getting his degree from Purdue, Tom went to work for a steel company. The guys have another friend, Mark, who, after graduating, wound up leasing a seat at the Mercantile Exchange and later buying it.

Fast-forward several years, when Tom is married with four sons. A couple other friends of their jumped on the “Merc bandwagon” and were doing quite well. By now Mark was a millionaire. Mark offered to help Tom get started working at the Merc. Of course, that would mean Tom would have to quit his job at the steel company, and still support four children and two adults.

I don’t recall how long he took to consider the offer. Eventually he quit the steel company job and headed to the Merc.

My brother’s friends said that for Tom’s first two months at the Merc he looked like a deer caught in headlights.

I recalled Tom’s story as I watched another episode of The Apprentice. Contestants who had watched other people in the role of the project manager on their teams seemed to forget everything they learned from observation.

How to Choose the Right Commercial Lender and the Right Commercial Loan
It is often tempting to jump into the first opportunity for a commercial loan that you may come across. While your tendency may be to focus on how additional funds may support or expand your business or commercial real estate portfolio, you have to take the time to make two important considerations - choosing the right commercial lender as well as the right loan for your business. You should evaluate potential lenders as well as their commercial financing options to see which are best suited for your needs.

I Can't Get No Employee Satisfaction
I'm not happy. The printer has still not been fixed and now my chair is broken. The problem with this place is that it is falling apart. My boss is okay but has no clue what is going on.That new guy that started last week, who no one bothered to introduce, has been given a job that he has no idea how to do; why didn't they just ask me? I could have told them that a new set of drawings have been issued so even if he did know what he was doing the drawings he is using are obsolete anyway. Sometimes

An Introduction to Supply Chain Management
The mere mention of supply chain management, outside of business circles, tends to set eyes rolling. While it may not be of interest to the average lay-person, it is an item of great interest to those in the business community. Supply chain management is a crucial element of good overall business management. Long term viability and corporate profitability are critically dependent upon it. Let's spend a few minutes exploring the basics of supply chain management.Supply chain management refers to t

Marketing a Mold Business on the Web
Running a mold inspection business, home inspeciton busness, or remediation company can be quite challenging when it comes to customers finding your business. How do new customers know your a great company and of course how can they find you?Well now in the era of search Google, MSN, and Yahoo are creating new ways to reach out to customers. The most beneficial one I believe for mold businesses and home inspectors is the creation off local search. We have had our clients rave about how local searc

Rather, I saw deer-caught-in-headlights expressions. Then compassion would kick in and I cut them some slack as I thought, “Well, they’re on TV, so of course they’re nervous.”

But then I would think, “Hello? You’re on TV and you know it! Create a plan and act on it!”

The truth is, you don’t have to be on TV managing a team to get stuck looking like a deer caught in headlights while in a leadership role. You could be leading –

    • a corporate division
    • a small business’ distribution area
    • a meeting of a dozen people in a conference room
    • your kid’s soccer team

    and just freeze.

So what do you do when you’re in a new leadership situation and you’re feeling as if every good idea just took a vacation from your brain? (Who told all of those good ideas they could leave now?)

    1. Pretend you’re an actor. Let’s face it: Actors get paid to display emotions that aren’t real. The best in their field are skilled at making us believe they know something they don’t actually know or feel something they don’t actually feel. Some adult education programs offer classes called “Acting for Non-actors,” which teaches acting skills for real-world social situations (such as leadership).
