"Fear obviously is not a factor for you" declares the host at the end of the extremely popular TV show called Fear Factor. He says this to the winner that has faced the challenges and beat out the competition.

Each contestant is put through a rigorous and often grotesque trial of endurance, strength, stomach power, and fear facing stunts. The prize is $50,000 plus the knowledge that you have faced and beat your fears. It is amazing that the winner is more often than not the one you would have picked to lose because of their quiet manner, slight physique, or even their apparent nervousness at trying some of the stunts.

When the Bible uses the word 'fear' it can be with a positive or negative reference. Fear, in relationship to our awe towards God, is a good, healthy, and productive response to our Creator. Fear, in relationship to life’s circumstances, is a negative response and typically shows a lack of understanding about Who God is.

Worldly fear is destructive. Just like in Fear Factor, people give up on the challenges simply because of being afraid of what they perceive is before them.

Many phrases or word pictures from the scriptures give us a better idea of what worldly fear really is and why it is displeasing to the Lord.

The phrase 'turning aside' is used to describe a person who walks in fear. This sort of person will run away from what is before them and change their path because of an obstacle place in their way.

'Shrinking away' is a great picture to describe the person who quietly shrinks into the background of the situation instead of moving forward in faith. This phrase is also a snapshot that shows someone moving away relationally from a potentially difficult friendship. Here are some additional snapshots of what fear looks like:

    1. Turning aside; to run away; change your path because of an obstacle

    2. Shrinking away (possibly to move away relationally from someone or from God’s direction)

    3. Spinning around under violent influence of emotions (to allow your emotions to be controlled by circumstances or thoughts)

    4. Being anxious or heavy in spirit

    5. Agitating with fear; to tremble

    6. Moving in a circle (to continue doing the same thing instead of trying something new)

    7. Inappropriate length of sorrow

    8. Being crushed; broken; dismayed

    9. Wasting away or fainting; to be discouraged

    10. Being timid (nervous, shy, or hesitant)

It all began in the late 90's. I wanted to put some news on my website. A diary. A list of forthcoming events. Let the visitors see my human side (I don't have one, but that's another story).I started with simple HTML. One page, with sections for every post. Simple. Then I heard about 'blogs' and 'blogging'. Very democratic. This encouraged my to post my outermost thoughts; on politics, London, and
