The people of Israel had come out of slavery in Egypt. All they’ve done since is wander around in the desert wilderness. Now after forty years, the Israelites begin moving about on the edges of Canaan and Moab. Bear in mind that the Jews number about 1.5 million people. Some scholars put their number as high as 3 million.
In any case, this huge mass of people camping on their borders makes the nearby nations nervous.
It made a Canaanite King, King Arad so nervous that he attacked Israel and took some Israelites captive. So Israel attacked king Arad and tore up his country. Likewise king Sihon, king of the Amorites attacked Israel. But Israel tore up Sihon and his kingdom too.
So Israel has fought two battles and been victorious both times. Now they’re moving again and have camped on the border of Moab. Just like the other kings, the Moabite king is nervous. This king’s name is Balak. And he’s freaked. He’s afraid of Israel.
King Balak has heard what Israel did to the other two kings in the area. He decides he doesn’t want to fight Israel in a straight up physical fight. Instead king Balak decides to fight fire with fire. Or in this case, fight spirit with Spirit.
Since the strength of Israel is the Spirit that fights for them, King Balak of Moab decides that he needs some spiritual muscle on his side. So King Balak, sends for a spiritual hit man whose name is Balaam. In Numbers 22:5 (niv), we read:
Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, sent messengers to go and get Balaam.
In Numbers 22:7 it says …… The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination. When they came to Balaam, they gave Balaam King Balak’s message. Balak said: "A people has come out of Egypt; they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the country. For I know that those you bless are blessed, and those you curse are cursed."
When we look closely at Balaam, right off the bat we know what the man is. We know the man is a warlock, a sorcerer, or something like that. We know this because Balak, King of Moab sends a divination fee with his message.
This speaks to the fact that Balaam is a paid warlock, a paid sorcerer! Old black folk from the rural southern U.S. would say that Balaam knows how to work roots. In Haiti they would call him a voodoo worker. Whatever you call it. It’s plain that Balaam had a reputation as someone who knew how to make things happen in the realm of the spirit. People don’t come to you with money in hand UNLESS you have a reputation for getting the job done.

Please observe that Balaam has access to God. For Balaam says to the messengers; "I will bring you back the answer the LORD gives me." It’s striking that Balaam expects to hear from God. It’s striking because earlier in Leviticus chapter 19: verse 26 and 31; God warns the Israelites to have nothing to do with divination or sorcery because it will defile them.
Here we have a sorcerer who talks to God and hears from God. And so the question arises, does God talk to demons? Does God talk to the devil? And the answer is yes! God does talk to Satan.
Over in Job 1:6 (niv) One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. The LORD said to Satan, Where have you come from? Satan answered the LORD, From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it. Then the LORD proceeds to brag on Job. Then God and Satan have this famous conversation in which God brags on Job and Satan slanders both Job and God.
So we see from scripture that God talks with the devil. And this is a good thing! For if you got any devils in your family, don’t be nervous! Cause God has had a conversation with them! Got any devils on your job? God has had a conversation with them down there, too!
What we learn from ease dropping on God’s conversation with Satan and with Balaam is that God tells them just how far they can go. When God talks with Satan he orders limits on Satan’s activities.
In the same manner, God tells Balaam that he is not permitted to curse Israel. And the reason Balaam can not curse Israel is because God has blessed them!
Now we could take a five minute praise break! Instead let me share with you what this means. It means that when God says you’re blessed, you’re blessed. And when God says you’re blessed nobody can stop your blessing.
When you’re blessed, the devil can’t put a hurt on you because God has blessed you! When you’re blessed, you can do anything but fail! When you’re blessed, your finances prosper even as your soul prospers! When you’re blessed, your words have power and do not fall to the ground! When you’re blessed, people look at you and say; Look what God has done! When God says you’re blessed, all the devil can do is shake his head and groan!
Now, Balaam’s story continues for another two chapters.
In numbers 22:31 we see Balaam in another conversation. This time he’s talking with the Angel of theLord.
