The purpose of this article is to show that Christians must repent even after conversion.
Repentance is a basic doctrine of Christianity (Hebrews 6:1). We must believe the gospel, repent, (Mark 1:15) and be baptized if we are to have eternal life (Acts 2:38).
A Deeper Level of Conversion
We must keep the 10 commandments to receive eternal life (Matthew 19:16-19). Yet, we are saved by the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8) because we all have sinned (Romans 3:23). The Pharisees kept the 10 commandments in the letter. Yet, Jesus Christ often pointed out their hypocrisy (Matthew 23:13-15, 23-29, Luke 11:44). He said that our righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees if we are to inherit the Kingdom of God (Matthew 5:20).
Even after conversion, we still sin and we must repent. We must examine ourselves regularly. Repentance means to turn around from the wrong way, fear God, and begin to live the right way again.
The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 9:10). The fear of God means to hate evil (Proverbs 8:13). Therefore, to hate evil is the beginning of wisdom.
We begin to become wise and grow into a deeper level of conversion when we turn from our desire to sin and instead hate evil. We can hate evil because we see the disastrous effects that it has in spite of any temporary pleasure it might bring (Hebrews 11:25). We need to hate evil so much that we lose any desire to sin. We will never get to that state of perfection in this life, but we must make a valiant effort to do so (Matthew 11:12). Notice what James said about how lusts or wrong desires lead to sin.

15Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." (KJV)
After we became aware of a particular sin in our lives, we might have struggled to overcome it, but gave in to the temptation at times. We did so because we still had the desire to sin, even though most of the time we resisted the temptation. That is one level of conversion.
After a while we should have grown so that we no longer have any desire to commit that sin because we find that sin to be repulsive. We need to grow to the point where we find the thought of all sin to be repulsive. That is a much deeper level of conversion. Such growth requires a change of our hearts. We need to change from the inside rather than wanting to sin, but struggling to resist it because we know it is wrong.
We Need a New Heart
Let’s notice what God says about how we need to turn around and have a new heart through the prophet Ezekiel.
Ezekiel 18:26-32
"26When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.
27Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.
28Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
29Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the LORD is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?
30Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.
31Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?<
