Casual Articles - The Divine Call - My Summons to the Christian Ministry
When I Grow Up ers and sisters. Some of us cannot boast of any pedigree. Some of us cannot boast of possessing any great learning. Some of us can barely make ends meet, we have no wealth, our names are not renown but all glory to God, what a revelation, that it has pleased God to choose just such weak, unworthy creatures as ourselves to be light bearers in this dark world.I’ve just come back to work after nine glorious, sun-drenched days at home. This year, vacation was the week of July 4th. We stayed home instead of dashing off to a cottage on a lake. Aside from saving a few thousand bucks, I had plans! Amazing plans! Projects galore, and the gumption to tackle every one of them!I planned to weed every garden on the grounds. There would be no stragglers left standing when I was through! I would relocate the strawberry and raspberry beds to new locations. That, in itself, would be no small feat, since they are massive. Massive, and loaded with weeds, I might add. I would rototill a whole new border garden by the roadside and move the choked peonies and sundrops to a new home. It would be splendid! Superb! Riotous with color! And When Jesus was selecting His disciples, He did not visit the Ivy League universities looking for PhD’s. He did not choose from among presidents or governors judges or scientists, bishops or popes. His search criteria excluded the pretentious, the cunning, the self-occupied, the Rabbis, or the haughty. God was not interested in those who exalt themselves at the expense of others and look down upon them as being less than human. I need this time to look at myself as honestly as possible in the light of Calvary’s cross, lest I think more or less of myself than I ought.Anyone can get the axe at any time. It happens to good people and bad ones...hard workers as well as slackers."We feel you would be happier working for another company.""Sorry, business is falling off. We no longer need your services.""Operations are being consolidated in Mexico. The Bedrock Plant will be closed Feb. 1."Sugar-coated or not, the message is the same: You're fired! You've been sacked. You are out of a job!13 Steps To Survive and ProsperTherefore, it makes common sense to know what to do to survive and prosper should you ever get the dreaded "pink slip".1. Keep in mind that in the current environment the idea of womb to tomb job security is as dead as a hammer. Be loyal to your present employer, but never develop a romance During these moments of soul searching and spiritual assessment, I talk with God and ask Him to help me clearly see myself for what I really am. So often David’s Prayer has been my prayer: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” I petition God to reveal to me the fears that stagnate me, the pains that hinder my being fully His, the doubts that haunts me, the fetters that binds me and refuse to let me go. I pray that God take what little He has in me, and do the best that He can with it for His glory. Last night, I was reflecting upon my divine call to the Christian ministry. I am always humbled and when I recall the moment when His Spirit spoke to my soul with a stunning command. It was a turning point in my life. I remember hearing those three words that was to become my motivation and perseverance strength: “Feed my sheep.” Of course, initially, I wondered if it was Satan trying to trick me in some way. Then it occurred to me that Satan would be the last to be influencing me toward God. But I could not accept the possibility that God could be calling me. I was too determined to “do my own thing,” too prone to wander, too fond of the world. Why would God call me to the Christian ministry? I looked at my shortcomings, my failures, my self-disappointments, my inabilities, and my lack of knowledge. After all, I was only 17 years old. What did I have to offer? Why would God want me to represent Him, the Most High God? I did not even like to speak in school before classmates, much less the pulpit. Why would God call me? I was born into a dysfunctional family where domestic violence was commonplace. I was removed by the state and placed in foster care at the age of two. Even though I was blessed to have had wonderful Christian foster parents, I still could not fathom God calling one such as me. Furthermore, women in ministry during this time were few and even the few had to cope with bias, rejection and disparaging treatment within the Church. Why would God want me to join in their misery and strife? What is going on, I wondered to myself. Nevertheless, even as I tried to understand my experience and second-guess God, the Holy Spirit was doing His work in me. I began to realize that it must have been God with the summons to His awesome work, because I never would have chosen it for myself. Paul helped me comprehend my calling in his first letter to the Corinthians, chapter 1, verses 26-28: “think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are” I remember a sermon preached by my mentor one Sunday that suggested, Jesus passes by the President to meet with the homeless. Even though I was blessed to have had wonderful Christian foster parents, I still could not fathom God calling one such as me.I know many people have been "scammed" online before... including the Internet "Gurus" themselves :)Now, while some scams are real, others are not scams at all! People usually cry scam when they encounter a setback or failure or just something they don't understand... It's called the blame mentality. They just need to blame somebody or something for whatever went wrong & to appease their frustrations and excuse themselves...Many people also cry scam not because they have any real experience of it, but because they hear others do so & are just tempted to follow suit to perhaps get themselves some attention to feel important for having something "constructive" to say or to raise their own low self-esteem...Some even brand themselves as experts & expect others to follo Furthermore, women in ministry during this time were few and even the few had to cope with bias, rejection and disparaging treatment within the Church. If you know anything about Church history, you know that within a few short centuries after the death of Christ Jesus, the Christian religion had spread over the civilized world. God had chosen the weak things, poor fishermen, common people, to confuse the mighty. The strong tried everything possible to root out Christianity. They hastened one disciple after another to their death, but the more they persecuted, the more Christians multiplied. God chose the weak, the despised, those considered nobody’s, nonentities, those such as me, that through the foolishness of preaching and witnessing, a lost world could be saved from itself. Yes, God chose even me; a broken little Black girl from a alcoholic family. God chose me, rescued me, and put the pieces of my broken life back together again. He healed me, molded me, equipped me and sent me. Indeed, “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.” At the age of 21, I entered the Christian ministry and over three decades later, with the help of Almighty God, I am still proclaiming and glorifying His name. To this end was I born and to this end shall I die. To God be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
