Three Secrets to Getting a Promotion
No matter what type of industry you work in, no matter what level of position you currently hold, if you want to move up to a more fulfilling position with more pay and opportunity, there are three things you can do right now to grow your career. In my opinion, these three actions are “secrets” only because most women don’t do them consciously and deliberately. You can be different. You can have a Bodacious Career because you’ve decided to be proactive and in charge of you career. Here are th

Can Animals Really Teach Us Marketing? YES!
Copyright 2006 Marketing On The Playground (TM)Do you ever watch animal programs on TV? There’s one in particular I watch on Sunday mornings. I always learn so many things but this last week was different. The animals made such a connection with how we market. The show was focused around Pets Ahoy! at SeaWorld in Orlando, FL. It is a hilarious show with a menagerie of animals all working (playing) together. While listening to the producer talk about the program and animals, you could te
The Segway recall has created a flurry of excitement around the world. Lovers and enthusiasts of this splendid invention are cringing, as the bashers and complainers take another deep breath and start spewing their silly rhetoric.

Detractors are rubbing their hands together with glee at this Segway recall, and casual observations are (again) being made about George W. Bush’s stumble a few years back. Is this connected? Of course not. Mr. Bush fell off because he hadn’t turned on his mother’s Segway HT, and the device requires power to operate.

So, what exactly is involved in this latest Segway recall? The software can cause the wheels to reverse direction if a particular combination of moves takes place. Here is what you'd need to do to make this happen: First, take the Segway to its maximum speed, so that the speed limiter function actually pushes back to warn you that you are at the top of the speed range. Then, jump off the Segway, and then quickly jump back on.

As a Segway Tour operator, I’ve put hundreds of miles on HTs, and never encountered this. I’ve trained hundreds of gliders, and scolded dozens of exuberant teenaged boys pushing every conceivable limit, and never saw this happen.

In a world in which we must protect folks attempting to emulate the stars of "Jackass the Movie" and "Jackass 2", I guess this Segway recall is necessary. But, for an individual using a PT or HT in a responsible manner, this is so far from realm of possibility; it's not worth worrying about. After all, 6 out of 23,500 is 0.00026, or .026%. I'm not too worried about those odds.

Here are a few related quotes:

"It's a very minor problem and it's something I've never seen happen and I've been using them for two years. I've had more than 1,000 tourists on my Segway tour, from the age of 13 to 89, and it's never happened to any of them."

REDLANDS, CA - Redlands police have put their Segway self-balancing scooters out of commission temporarily following the manufacturer's announcement of a recall of all Segways.

Department officials learned Thursday that Segway Inc. is recalling 23,500 scooters due to a glitch that can cause the wheels to unexpectedly reverse direction.

The Police Department is awaiting a free software update that should fix the problem, according to Police Chief Jim Bueermann.

According to reports, riders elsewhere have been thrown from their scooters and in one incident, broke some teeth. Redlands police have not yet experienced such problems, according to Bueermann.

"They've worked flawlessly," Bueermann said. "After receiving the Segway service bulletin, we took them out of service temporarily as a precaution until they (get the) software upgrade that fixes the problem."

Kudos to Segway, Inc. for protecting a handful of irresponsible consumers from themselves, and risking even more bad press than they already had, in order to do the right thing. Integrity and popularity are not always close companions in our world.
