This is true in that free trade in of itself, without any other follow thru may actually further the problem as it allows those who produce for export in those countries a reason to further exploit their own people. But then again we know that humans will do anyway. But when controls are put in place for example; if people are exploited or abused trade stops; then this is a lever, which can alleviate that problem.
If people are too abused in secret “sweat shop” type situations then that too will eventually change. History shows, slave revolts, revolutions of the economically enslaved and industrial revolutions. Although the global alarmists can be credited with this argument they must understand that one lever (free trade) is not the only lever to promote democracy. And indeed it is rarely instituted without other collaboration from the World Bank, which can provide monies for upgrading the country; sewer treatment, fresh water and agricultural education and equipment as well.
