According to J’son & Partners estimates, in 2005 the satellite market turnover reached USD 600 million, and has great potential for further growth . Satellite communications provide unique possibilities for regional businesses and corporate companies. Due to Russia's sheerness and increasing demand in high quality communications, VSAT systems’ market growth in Russia averages 30% per year. Another trend is the increasing share of satellite Internet services in Russia. By the end of 2005, there were three satellite communication services providers in Russia, including GlobalStar, Inmarsat and Thuraya.
Based on the new Federal Space Program (2006-2015) approved by the Russian government in 2005, federal authorities will provide financing for modernisation of the satellite fleet (USD 11.4 billion). In addition, external financing sources will provide some USD 6.8 billion for this project. According to Russian Satellite Communication Company (RSCC), by 2015 the scheduled launches of new satellites will increase overall national satellite capacity by 580 transponders. In total the Russian satellite communication system will include 26 space devices (fixed satellite network and TV broadcasting), 2 satellites for TV re-broadcasting, as well as 12 satellites for mobile satellite communication systems. Based on ComNews reporting, RSCC’s revenues in 2006 exceeded USD 136 million.
