Then you realize that you're in charge of everything! It's probably best to start your own business when you're young, when you have unlimited reserves of energy and no doubts that you'll succeed. Old duffers know too much, have seen too many ways to lose the game. I was in business when I was young and then somehow got the crazy notion that I should go to college and become a professional. Then, for several years, I enjoyed telling my boss that I didn't want to go into business for myself each week when he was sweating finding enough to pay the payroll. "Did I ever tell you that I don't want to be in business for myself," I told him at least once a week for years. I was rather smug about it. Then something happened. I just knew I had to do it. And sometimes the floor gets swept and the weather turns cool and nothing could be sweeter than stepping into the studio and hearing the crisp scratch of the glass cutter as I score yet another piece of glass for an elegant piece of art.
