Even at that I sometimes find I have a hard time starting. When this happens to you, all you need to do is use some writing warm-ups. A writing warm-up is a set of three unrelated words and a stop watch set to five minutes. You first randomly pick any three words and then time yourself for five minutes and write anything that comes to mind. The only rule is that you must use the three words in you prose. This exercise is quite fun and it will warm up the brain to get it going.

When I sit down with a topic, I write everything that I know about the topic and limit myself to three or four paragraphs. This way I will not ramble needlessly. When I go back to edit, I can add important details and illustrations. Test yourself and see if you can write for five minutes without a break. It does take practice.
