So the question is that I get from time to time is: how much do I have to rewrite an article? How much do I need to change it? And I'm very very hesitant to ever give a number.

Let me ask you this. Let's just say that search engines right now indicate that you have to change forty percent of the words or the order of the words--or the sentences or whatever. However you want to define forty percent. Let's just say that the search engines require that right now.
