But what happens if April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday? Then what?
Then it's the next business day, which is often April 16.
But what if Sunday is April 15 . . .
and Monday the 16th is a state holiday for a few states but not for most? Then what?
The IRS issued a ruling on November 20, 2006, saying that six states and Washington D.C, get an extra day to file their 2006 personal income tax returns. That day is Tuesday, April 17, 2007, since April 15 is a Sunday, and April 16 is a state holiday for those states. They're celebrating Patriot's Day.
Those states are:
- Maine
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- New Hampshire
- New York
- Vermont
- District of Columbia
This applies to:
- Federal individual income tax returns, both paper returns and those filed electronically
