The holidays are here and you want Santa to bring you a new job or at the least a better job, right?

Except for agencies and retail stores that employ seasonal help, most companies decrease hiring during the holidays and resume hiring after January 1. However, the holidays are a perfect time to prepare for your getting your new job.

First, examine your current resume. This is a good time to update information. When reviewing the educational portion of your resume, remember to list the highest level of education along with the date you achieved your degree, diploma or certificate.

If you have completed college, it is not necessary to provide the date you graduated from high school or the name of your high school.

If you have obtained degrees in different fields, list both degrees. For example, you may have an Associate Degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, list both. Listing both will increase your marketability.

An easy way to stay on track during a job search is to set a goal, and with each goal there is a process you must follow to get to the end result. Finding the perfect job can be equated to playing a round of golf; in golf the idea is to get the lowest score on eightee
orporate recruiter, I encourage you to use this month to sharpen your interviewing skills. Practice giving clear and concise answers to frequently asked interview questions.

Two of the most commonly asked questions are:

    1) What are your strengths and weaknesses?
    2) Tell me about yourself.

Write your answers on paper and say the answers aloud. You may feel foolish doing this exercise but it will pay off. You will have a ready response to these questions when the interviewer asks.

When stating your strengths, give a response that relates to the job you are seeking. If you are seeking a job as an administrative assistant, one of your strengths should be that you are a good communicator. Or if you are seeking a job as a programmer, one of your strengths should be your ability to focus for long periods of time.

When stating your weaknesses, avoid using the words I can’t instead say I want to improve in (state the given area).

The most important thing to remember on the job hunt is the two p’s: remain positive and prepared. Here’s to your success on your job hunt!
